CO other than Durango; Pagosa? Colorado Springs?

We have family in Durango and have stayed there many years and summers. This summer we are thinking about staying in Pagosa Springs, which I love, or trying Colorado Springs, where I've never been. We like to hike some, bike, and just relax and be outdoors. However, we are also interested in staying at a resort.

Does anyone think for July Pagosa or CO Springs would be better for our purposes? Thank you!

Actually I see that CS isn't a mountainous town like I thought. So I am now considering Breckenridge or Pagosa Springs for a relaxing vacation in the mountains. Any thoughts or favorites?

For a resort I'd take a good look at Keystone, biased I may be but in summer we do all that you are wanting without ever getting in our car.

Tons of festivals, great food, great biking both cross country and downhill, hiking, gold. All right there. Easy drive over to Breck for shopping too.

Colorado Springs is definitely a mountain gateway, but also a large city. There's no city in North America that has the vertical of 14,000 foot mountains in such close proximity to the city. Easy access to Pike's Peak and other great mountain destinations within 15-30 minutes, plus Garden of the Gods right in the heart of the city. Great spot to visit.

But, as noted, maybe look at some of the other mountain villages in Colorado. You have some great suggestions.

Have fun.

Pagosa Springs definitely meets your criteria for hiking, biking and relaxing in the mountains. Another activity would include floating / tubing on the river downtown. Plenty to explore in July in surrounding national forest and wilderness areas...

Check out www.visitpagosasprings.com for more info on planning a trip to the area.

That is right, Colorado Springs gives you great access to the mountains but is not in the mountains. Many people think that it is. It is the second largest city in the state, a mostly suburban area.

Are you flying or driving in? Is budget a concern?

We are driving in from Oklahoma. Budget is a little bit of a concern as we are bringing our 2 boys, 7 and 10. Although I will pay more to stay in a 2.5 to 4 star hotel. We also want to horseback ride. Thanks for all the lovely suggestions! So hard to choose.

Since you are driving in it makes sense to look at the Pagosa Springs area. I am not a big fan of driving and the area is lovely.

Should you want to look at Keystone you will find the lodging very affordable in summer. You can easily find a 2 bedroom condo for around 125-150 per night. http://tinyurl.com/d2ykoq9

You all have been SO helpful. Our trip is 7 days in length. We have decided, for sure, to spend the first 4 in Colorado Springs. We are considering spending the next 3 in Breckenridge or Frisco. We are a family, and besides hiking and maybe wading, we just want to be out in nature. Does anyone have preferences of Frisco over Breck or vice versa? Or, alternatively, we could spend the whole 7 in Co Springs. I just don't want everyone to get bored. :)
