Looking for wildlife

We arrived in the US (from Australia) with the intention of visiting the national parks. As all national parks have been shut down we are a little at a loss as to what to do. We are currently in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and would like to find a destination where we could see some wildlife. We will be here for another 2 weeks and are holding out visiting the grand canyon till last ( in the hope the shutdown will be over). So we would like to stay around the Idaho, Wyoming, Utah area. Has anyone some advice?

You might check this article for wildlife viewing in Colorado. You don't have to be in a national park to see it! www.colorado.com/activities/wildlife-viewing

For info and advice on other locations, post this in the Road Trips forum or those individual states.

The governor of Colorado is working to reopen Rocky Mountain National Park. I do not know when that will happen. RMNP is the best place in Colorado to see wildlife. I will update the information at this topic as new information becomes available.

Since you are in Steamboat Springs, you might want to visit State Forest State Park (famous for moose) which is not impacted by the government shutdown.

The Denver Post has reported that the governors of Utah, South Dakota and Arizona have also asked about opening national parks with state funding. They reported that the governor of Wyoming does not plan to use state money for this purpose. Here is the article.

Hopefully you have heard that Rocky Mountain National Park has reopened through Oct. 20. The Grand Canyon is open for the next week also.
