Katonah Museum of Art

Yes, I do realize that the Katonah Museum of Art is in NY, not CT. However, since we're fitting a tour of the "All Things Bright and Beautiful:California Impressionists" exhibition into our August vacation to CT shore/Litchfield Jazz Festival, I thought posters to CT forum might offer ideas of anything we shouldn't miss either in Katonah itself or region between Katonah and Southbury.

There are the sculpture gardens at PepsiCo headquarters located in Purchase, NY (about 20 min. south of Katonah),as well as Purchase College (across the street from PepsiCo!)which is home to the Neuburger Museum of Art.

Downtown Katonah is simply charming...perhaps you should plan on a nice lunch there!

You'll only be about 2 miles from Martha Stewart's estate in Bedford when you're at the Katonah Museum of art....if you want to visit simply continue south on Rt. 22, going past the John Jay Homestead museum, and then go Straight at the next intersection (following signs for Caramoor). Her place begins at the corner and runs for quite a distance along the left side of the road. Caramoor is also a gem...lovely gardens...history up the yazoo.

How about a visit to the Rockefeller estate, Kykuit??

Talk about an amazing view of the Hudson River and a stellar art collection! Only about 30 min. from Katonah.

Have fun on your visit!

We'll have to plan to return to explore the Hudson River Valley more fully someday, but as our plans have developed for this vacation, it seems as if we'll probably only fit in lunch with our time at the museum. Any particular spots in Katonah you'd suggest?

The Aldrich in Ridgefield, CT is a nifty little museum not too far from Katonah. Downtown Ridgefield also has tons of good eats (I used to live there).

Though we needed to switch a variety of aspects of our vacation (including month), we did make it to the California Impressionists exhibition as we were driving back to OH after nearly a week in CT. Because we arrived at the Katonah Museum of Art before noon, admission was free. And the opportunity to view these expansive coastal paintings was priceless!

Afterwards we headed to the village to poke around the shops and look for lunch. A store clerk directed us to William Nicholas, a catering place which occupies the space of the former Katonah Library. This place is a feast for the eyes, but the food is quite good, too -- a variety of sandwiches (we split low-fat tuna on black bread), special salads (my husband had barley/corn) and sweet treats such as our excellent lemon square.
