Overwhelmed :) Need ideas for trip...

Hi all -

I have been reading through all the forums and there is so much to see and do!

My husband and I are taking a road trip from here in Detroit to see the New England states. We will be in CT to visit a friend in Hartford but it seems like there are some good beaches in CT. I am 5 months pregnant so we won't be up to very adventurous activities but are looking for a quieter beach area to relax for a few days with maybe some nearby sights to see. Any suggestions?

Any other ideas of things that are "must-see" in New England would also be useful :)

Thanks in advance!

Hoping you'll be heading north and driving through Canada. This will afford you the opporunity to investigate the area of the 1000 Islands in New York whch is very, very beautiful. You might look into stopping there for a night, maybe going to the boat museum in Clayton or taking the boat out to Boldt Castle. Just a thought .............

Hi Holly,

The beaches in CT are not all that great. We are on long island sound not the Atlantic Ocean. We do have a few you can check out if you wish, however.

Rocky Neck www.ct.gov/dep/cwp/view.asp?a=2716&q=325256

Hammonasset www.ct.gov/dep/cwp/view.asp?a=2716&q=325210

To find the best beaches in the area you need to go to Rhode Island. We always go to RI is we want to go to the beach. Misquamicut is closest and it is very nice, but Narragansett is a bit nicer.

Misquamicut http://www.misquamicut.org/

Narragansett http://www.narragansettri.com/parks/beach.htm

How long do you have for your trip? Have you figured an itinerary yet? Newport RI is a great place to visit. If you plan to hit Newport, there are 3 beaches there that are nice as well.

Also you may want to consider visiting Cape Cod MA.

Let me know if you have any other specific questions.

If I can help with your itinerary at all, I am more than happy to help.

CT beaches are probably not as nice as those in RI but they are usually calmer and a little warmer which might be good for you. You can stay at a nice resort on the water or get a cheaper motel and hit some of the suggested beaches. I suggest a stroll down Main St in Essex with a visit to the Griswold Inn, a cruise on a Thimble Islands tour boat http://www.thimbleislands.com/ and a visit to the Mashantucket Pequot Museum. http://www.pequotmuseum.org/

New England depends on what you like: Boston for history and baseball, Vermont/New Hampshire for mountains and scenic villages. Maine for lobster and coastline.

Hi Wallymoto-

Lots of great suggestions here as usual! As mentioned, the beaches in CT are not that great - very rocky/lots of pebbles, no surf to speak of (due to the Long Island Sound), and usually small. I second the recommendation of Newport, RI as an alternative. It's fairly close and is a wonderful place to get that New England seafaring town feeling. There are tons of great things to do there including see the famous mansions, walk the Cliff Walk, hit a beach, and go on a boat ride.

Another idea is to take a ferry from nearby Point Judith to Block Island for a few days and enjoy the many beaches there as well as the quaint downtown area. Here's a link to an article detailing a road trip through New England that might be useful to you - planning-fun-road-trips.com/east-coast-road-…

Hope this helps and have fun!
