Best city to visit for weekend getaway

My boyfriend and I are considering a weekend getaway to CT. We aren't really sure which city would be best to visit though...Hartford? Bridgeport? New Haven?

If anyone has any personal recommendations or thoughts, they would be greatly appreciated. Also, are there any good wineries there that provide a nice tour?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Stephanie,

Here are a couple sites re: CT wineries.

If you can give me an idea of what your idea is of a perfect weekend away, I can try to give you suggestions on where to stay.

Forget Hartford or Bridgeport.. you will not want to waste a weekend there. You may want to consider Mystic which is not too far from the CT wine trail.

I also enjoy New Haven. I think it is a great city. You can visit, tour Yale if that interests you and there are lots of great restaurants.

For more romance, you may want to consider a spa getaway in Norwich which is close enough to Mystic for a visit or even the casinos.

The Casinos in CT are the best in the world. It is not all about gambling.. it is top notch restaurants, big name entertainment great hotels and spa etc.. could be a very romantic, fun time.

If you want to do a winery, making a home base of one of the casinos, norwich inn spa or mystic may work for you.

Let me know if you have any questions at all. If you again can paint a picture of what your idea of "ideal" is, I can help you more.

Stephanie, the last places I'd visit in CT would be Bridgeport, Hartford and even New Haven (sorry, Suz). You haven't mentioned when you'll be visiting but you might want to couple the wine trail with visiting one of our many weekly country fairs....watching the oxyen pulls or horse shows, watching sheep shearing, viewing some of the local handicrafts while sipping mulled cider or eating a hot bowl of clam chowder served in bread bowls. Here's the schedule: http://www.ctfairs.org/fair_map.aspx Durham is a HUGE fair. The entire town shuts down for it.

The link that Suz sent for the wine trail works well with this.

The leaves have just begun to turn color here. In spite of the warm temperatures we'll have this week, fall is certainly in the air. It's best enjoyed in the beautiful Connecticut countryside or at the shoreline.

Raecam,

I think you are agreeing with my post.. I also wrote that she should forget Bridgeport/Hartford and offered other options.

Yes, Sun, I am in complete agreement (except the New Haven part). I can't imagine having a more pleasurable weekend than doing the wine trail, maybe catching one of the fairs. I love this time of year in CT.

I agree with the two previous posters... my vote would be for Mystic- a great town to spend the weekend. I'd also like to mention the western part of the state- Kent in particular and the area surrounding it is just beautiful... lots of beautfiul scenic drives and even a covered bridge...

This is true, CT is not really famous for its cities. Hartford being the insurance capital of the world doesn't bring in many tourists.

The autumn fairs and wine tours are both good ideas. Not being a casino type myself, I normally wouldn't recommend going to either of them, but if you have an interest in American Indian history, the Mohegan museum there is top notch.

I personally like New Haven, but it is certainly no NYC or Boston.

It does really depend on what kinds of things OP and her boyfriend are interested in doing.
