September Road Trip

My sister & I are considering a September road trip from Philadelphia to the DE beach areas to check them out for possible retirement living in a few years. Neither of us has children, so granchild amusement isn't a factor. We've been going to Cape May all our lives & love it, but fear NJ is too expensive for year-round.

We don't know the area at all & would appreciate suggestions for a 2-3-4 day itinerary (maybe from Lewes to Fenwick Island?). Any towns we should avoid because of possible summer hassles?

Thanks very much.

Pick one of the communities and make it your base of operations. These beach communities are all fairly close together. (Note that Lewes is on Delaware Bay, not the Atlantic Ocean.) No real reason to keep changing lodging when an hour of driving will take you from Cape Henlopen to the MD state line.

Research has surely told you that Rehoboth is by far the most-populous and most year-round town. Also note that for Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, the ZIP code (mailing address) is a lot larger than the incorporated municipal area. So you can live in "Rehoboth Beach" and be miles from the ocean.

There's one main road through all the beach towns -- DE Route 1 -- and all the towns have "summer hassles" related to traffic. If you live west of Route 1, you'll have a little less hassle but overall the Delaware coast is a typical resort area: the locals put up with some major inconveniences during the tourist season. The tradeoff is a glorious spring and fall and a milder winter than elsewhere in Delaware.

Tripadvisor does not encourage advising on relocation -- it's supposed to be about vacationing. So you might want to post a similar query on city-data.com. Here's a recent thread with some advice that could be helpful:

Thanks so much - this was very helpful (& I didn't know about the ban on relocation advice).

This is a "travel related" website. Certainly anyone relocating will be travelling, perhaps several times, to their intended location. They will likely have the same needs and questions as other visitors, regardless of whether they are traveling there for vacation, business, or any other purpose. Be that as it may, this site does not allow specific questions or threads about relocation.

At some point, we may be allowed to answer such questions, but until then, to do so would likely result in this thread being closed. It may be anyway.

Best Wishes...
