Help with beach choice, please

We will be traveling in June from Miami to Orlando, after a cruise. Would like to spend a day at an "atlantic coast" beach. There are so many choices. Would like a family friendly, no nude, etc. Do not need a hotel. Would like pretty water, I read somewhere that Cocoa Beach water is not as pretty because of a river inlet somewhere. We already have that in Texas with the gulf. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Atlantic Coast beaches are not going to have that same aqua blue look as a Gulf Coast beach - however if you are going to be in Orlando take a drive to the Canaveral National Seashore... the beaches are good and there is soooo much to do in the area - like Merritt Island Wildlife Drive - tour NASA- see the Space Coast - the great Florida Birding trails and more... Plus you can mark that off of the list of National Parks and Protected areas if you keep up with that type of thing as I do... Hope that helps!

The atlantic beaches are not blue/aqua water? I thought they would be prettier that the gulf side? I've only seen Texas beaches, Panama City Beach and Cozumel. Thanks.

Atlantic coast beaches are blue waters but with more of a darker tint as compared to the aqua blue beaches of the Gulf Coast. The beaches here are pretty / white and sandy. Here is a link to the Canaveral National Seashore page so you can see some pictures and decide from there what you may like... http://www.nps.gov/cana/index.htm

If you ever make it up near Jacksonville ( about 2 and a half to 3 hours from Orlando ) Little Talbot Island and Amelia Island are pristine sandy white beaches with great shell hunting. But, that is probably too far to drive for a day trip.

Try Vero or Jupiter Beaches on the Atlantic if you want an alternative on the way up to Cocoa Beach.

All the gulf coast is not the same. You should see anna Maria Island and Gasparilla Island. I used to live in the Bahamas and let me tell you, these two have just as good beaches. Water has a real blue green tropical quality. siesta Key Cresecent beach is right up there too.

Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne (Miami) is on Steve Leatherman's top 10 list this year. It's pretty much free of surf, and is a nice natural alternative to Miami Beach (with better sand, too). The public park on adjacent Virginia Key features a seagrass bed.

Farther up the coast, the South Florida urban area has assorted alternatives. For urban, Red Reef Park and the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center at Boca Raton are nice. For less urban, some possibilities:

-Carlin Park, Jupiter. Easy access from I-95. At east end of state road 706.

-north from there, Blowing Rocks Preserve on Jupiter Island isn't a beach (it has rocks), but is a neat natural area, owned by The Nature Conservancy.

-north end of Jupiter Island, Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. Parking lot, no amenities.

-Hutchinson Island from Stuart to Ft Pierce has some developed, some undeveloped beaches.

-Ft Pierce Inlet State Park and the much smaller Avalon State Park to its north are popular recreational spots. The Inlet is a popular surfing spot, but with a gently sloping beach and rather gentle waves.

-At Vero Beach, South Beach Park is the one to visit. In the unlikely event that there's surf, it can be hazardous. Pay attention to lifeguard.

-North of Vero, Wabasso Beach is tiny (next to Disney) but has lifeguard and Boppy's for cheap lunch.

-Sebastian Inlet State Park is unfriendly for playing in the water (except at the shallow beach facing the Inlet), but has a museum honoring the 1715 Treasure Fleet disaster, a fishing museum, and you can watch very hot young surfers if there's waves.

The Atlantic beaches are aqua under usual conditions. Color varies with the amount of surf; sand kicked up by waves makes for lighter-colored water. Atlantic sand not so white as the Gulf version, which makes for some color difference.

Note that June is the start of the Rainy Season and at the beaches, the start of the No Surf Season.

South of Ft. Lauderdale at Dania is the John U. Lloyd State Park Beach. Nice beach area with lovely water (in my opinion) with restrooms and shower facilities and it is immediately south of the channel for Port Everglades, so you can watch boats and ships entering and exiting.
