Southern Florida

We will be flying into Tampa next week for about 9 days. We have a car rented and looking to go to Miami for a few days as well. We have two children ages 5 and 12. Looking for suggestions for great stays, food and excursions. Not on a strict budget but don't want to spend alot either. What are some must see and do's?

The drive from Tampa all the way to Miami is fairly long, so you might break it up by visiting beaches and other attractions along the Gulf coast as far south as Naples. Maybe Lovers Key State Park, the Ringling circus museum in Sarasota, a garden or two. In the Naples area, maybe the boardwalks of Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.

You might ask at the Miami Beach forum or Miami forum about what to do in the big city, which will be full of snowbirds and perhaps not an easy place to find lodgings. The main entrance of Everglades National Park near Everglades City and Biscayne National Park (boat ride) might be of interest.

Red Reef Park also has the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. Great beach park.
