Fort Myers Beach and Florida Keys

Needing advice and tips on taking a family vacation to Fort Myers Beach area. We would go Friday March 7th through Sunday March 16th 2014. We have 3 daughters 20, 15 and 12. We like nice white sandy beaches, going for walks or biking, shopping, casual restaurants and close to the action.

We would like to rent either a condo/ cottage or apartment (whichever would be cheapest) but do want to be on the beach. We do not do vacations like this often so would love to be right on the beach, oceanfront, but anything with a kitchen. Any advice on staying on the north or south end of Fort Myers Beach? We would like to be within walking distance of shops and entertainment. Is the north or south end better?

We are thnking of goinig to Sanibel a day and maybe Siesta Key Beach a day.

I have read Siesta Key beach is rated #1 for a white sandy beach, so would it be worth the drive there??

We would stay on Fort Myers Beach for 6 or 7 days, and then possibly driving to the Florida Keys for 2 nights. Maybe even staying overnight 1 night along the drive since its about a 6 or 7 hour drive. We would like to end up at Key West. We could stay anywhere there- even a cheap motel, but clean. Is this too much to consider in one trip? We have a total of 10 days. Is there more things to do in Key West then Fort Myers Beach? Should we stay longer in the Keys and make Fort Myers Beach a shorter trip?

Any advice and ideas would be greatly appreciated! Affordable places to stay, the must see and do list, and casual restaurants.

Thanks so much!!!

Jenny

FMB has many condos with gulf front views. I think you might prefer the north end of the island because it is where the action is. You will find Time Sq. has many restaurants and tourist shops. The pier is also located at the end of TS. Check out www.gulfcoastalrents.com & www.vrbo.com, you will find many condos for rent. The lower the number is north end and as the numbers get higher it will indicate mid-island and south end. The Edison Beach condos are very close to TS. If your main interest is to enjoy the beach FMB is the better choice. Key West is fun but not know for it's beaches. In fact the beach they do have is man made. Check out the Key West and FMB forums for more info.

Does anyone know of any little gems - nice, clean motels- on the beach or close, pool, walking distance to shopping and restaurants.

Thank you.

I have a thought for you- what did you want to do/see in the keys?

If it is Key west, and you don't fancy a 7 hour drive, then you can take the KW express ferry from Ft Myers. Foot pax only, and you can stay a night or two if you want.
