Stop over between St. Augustine and Fort Lauderdale?

need suggestions where to stay overnight on our way from St. Augustine to Fort Lauderdale. Yes, we could drive all the way down, but this is not our favorite option.

Any suggestions for an affordable, clean, nice place to stay? Plus things worth to see or do?

First trip to Florida, couple and adult daughter (college student). Trip in April 2014.

Travel time restricted to April by the university schedule.

Hello cibiem,

It's 300 miles, or 4 hours driving time on Interstate 95, from Saint Augustine to Fort Lauderdale.

You could go over to A1A, the ocean route, and stay in any one of the ocean towns along the way.

Or you could go to Orlando which offers lots of things to do, and stay there for a night or two.

Hope you will spend a day or two in Saint Augustine. It's a tourist destination that folks like, and to which they frequently return.

Suggest you focus in on where you would like to stay, and then look for lodging. Anywhere you chose will have agreeable hotels that can be recommended. Go to the top of this screen, and click tripadvisor's "Hotels" tab. Hotels are listed in approximate order of popularity. You can read what people have said about the horels who have stayed in them. Most of us who live around here haven't ever stayed in the hotels around here.

Stuart is a nice place to stop overnight. About 3 hours from St Augustine and 1.5 from Ft Lauderdale. Nice historic downtown set along the river. Beach just across the bridge is lovely. Quite different from St Augustine or Ft Lauderdale. Less "touristy". Nice boutique shops, very good restaurants, historic theatre, outdoor dining options. About 7 minutes east of I95. Of course there are several options. Sebastian, Fort Pierce Beach, Stuart, Jupiter/Juno Beach, West Palm Beach, Delray Beach. Each has a unique tone. What kiind of things do you want to do/see? Parks, boat tours, beaches, towns?

Depending on speed and the need for a refueling stop, it will be somewhere around 4 1/2 to 5 hours driving time. The halfway point on I-95 is around Palm Bay, so staying somewhere between Cocoa Beach and Vero Beach would split the drive in half.

Cocoa Beach has the most hotel rooms in that area, as it's a resort town right on the ocean. However, it is about 10-15 minutes east from I-95 via the Beachline (SR 528) Expressway. See www.visitcocoabeach.com if you want to get an feel for the vicinity. There also will be a few motels right along the highway.

If you're looking for another major sight along the way, Kennedy Space Center is just north of Cocoa Beach, and can easily consume most of a day.
