Never ever EVER been to GA coast -- where do we go?

Looking for suggestions on where to stay. Like I said, we've NEVER been to GA other than the interstate. We've stayed on the NC coast (not real tropical), the Charleston SC beaches, and a lot of FL, but never GA.

We're looking for a ocean front rental on the GA coast this summer. Looking for places with 2 or more bedrooms and have budgeted $2000 for lodging (including all the fees/taxes). We have 2 little kids and MAY take our small dog (?). We loved being on the beach, renting bikes, going to near by parks, hearing/and seeing the ocean from out room at night. We prefer the less crowded to busy and houses/villas over large complexes... actually we'd like to stay away from the sea of mega condos all together if possible. We don't want to stayin a totally remote area though -- its nice to go out for some local food or get take-out rather than having to cook ourselves.

Any suggestions?

Jekyll Island would be your answer - ocean, less

crowds, no touristy sort of beach. They have bikes

to rent and also those carriage-type bikes which

are great for a family. Jekyll is close to St. Simons

Island which is great for restaurants and shopping,

but does not have the beach or views that Jekyll has.

Hopefully, some locals will post and help you out more.

Don't forget Savannah and Tybee Island. Tybee is

just a few miles from Savannah and is another

small, not croweded beach area.

Check all these out online.

Good luck and have a great trip!

while not a native, i have visited tybee island several times. it would be great for family. although it has built up a little through the years, it still has that old beach town feeling. great spots to eat, can walk to lots! great for kids. very short ride to savaanah.

Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned our preference is as north as possible. We come by way of central KY. I think the route would take us towards Charleston then south?? Charleston is 9 hrs, Hilton Head looks like about 11 and so on. If we can find a location in norther GA, its just that much less driving. I'll have to get out a map to see if southern GA has a better route than what I was thinking.

chimiler,

I thought you were interested in the coast and there's no coast in northern GA!! Study a map and

do a little online research. Here are some good north GA spots: Blue Ridge, Brasstown Bald (highest

point in GA, near Blairsville), Helen (Bavarian style

very small mountain town), Dahlonega - sight of the

very first US gold discovery & neat small town (you

can pan for gold & shop in all the neat gift shops),

Tallulah Gorge (state park, near Clayton another

good small town). Notice I keep repeating 'small town' - most are north of Atlanta! North GA has lots

of beautiful mountains, cabins you can rent, great

hiking trails, lots of waterfalls, etc. Read the

forums, research online.

If I can be of any help, please let me know.

Have a great trip!

Yes, I noticed that. I'm not talking about the northern part of the STATE, but the coastline. The GA coast is about 120 miles long. While not that long, from where I'm traveling, it would take an extra 2 hrs to get to St. Marys (the southern part of the GA coastline) over compared to Savannah (northern part of the GA coastline). Thanks for your suggestions in any case.

Tybee Island is as far up the Georgia northern coast as you can get. I'd say it should take you about an hour more to get there (if that) than it does to get to Hilton Head Island.

Sorry I misunderstood - we say 'north GA' for the

top part of the state and 'coastal Ga' for the coastal part! As the other poster said Tybee and

Savannah are about as far north on the coast as you

can get before entering S.C. Savannah is a beautiful, historical city with loads of things to see

and do. Then, you also have the option of a beach

at nearby Tybee. You could choose to stay at either

and still enjoy the other. There is lots of lodging

at both. Hope this helps. Have a good trip.

You're describing Jekyll Island. Have you tried www.vrbo.com for rentals?

You're describing Jekyll Island. Tybee's nice only because Savannah is within 30 minutes. I find Jekyll cleaner and less crowded. You'll definitely have to spend a day at Cumberland Island. Also try to do some nature tours. Lots of History and great for families. It is furthur south than Savannah but well worth it. Hilton Head's nice too but more developed than Jekyll. Have you tried www.vrbo.com for rentals?

I would have to direct you to St. Simons Island. Fabulous restaurants, great shopping and lots of fun things to do with the children. I would also have to say to check VRBO.com for great listings.
