LEAST "resorty" resort that has a kids club

We generally prefer quieter, more intimate/unique hotels to larger, sprawling corporate resorts with half-a dozen pools - but we are coming with our 7-year old for the first time and for the first time we see the appeal of a good kids club to keep him busy so we can sit by the pool and read! :)

Any recommendations for the least "resorty" places that still have a kids club - looking for Christmas vacation 2018? We love Kauai but also open to Big Island. (or, if you have a spectacular suggestion on a different island, great - just trying to avoid the holiday crowds as much as possible)

Thank you!

For the Big Island, Mauna Kea Beach hotel, Fairmont Orchid, Four Seasons Hualalai, and Mauna Lani Bay Hotel all have kids clubs.

Christmas is generally sold out all over Hawaii. I would expect all hotels to be equally crowded. The Big Island is "big" though, so it doesn't feel crowded.

I recommend booking your rental car asap. Generally by September, the rental companies are getting low on inventory for Christmas/New Year's and start hiking the rates through the roof. By November, people have a hard time finding rental cars to book at all.

The Mauna Lani on the Big Island is probably the most Hawaiiana resort on the state, and the only one initiated by a Native Hawaiian. Historic preserves and sites, ancient fishponds, a cultural center, and a very good kids program. Some of the best snorkeling in the state. Quiet, peaceful, but quite a bit to do within the resort (restaurants, shoreline walks, spots club, etc).

However, if it’s in the budget, while it’s corporate and does have a lot of pools (including two lovely adult pools and a snorkel lagoon), the Four Seasons Hualalai is the best hotel in the state, has a free, worldclass kids program, and is very low key (two story bungalows), not large, and is also very Hawaiiana, with a cultural center and cultural advisors as well, like the Mauna Lani.

But HualalaI has a ten night minimum over Christmas and generally sells out a year in advance.
