Mauii and Kuaii over Xmas Break

Is this the worst time for rain. I visited many years a go on honeymoon and fell in love with the 2 islands. This time would like to bring 18 yr old son with us. There is a possibility we may stick with 1 island (depending on how flights work out).

Thanks

It's the most *expensive* time of year to visit Hawaii. You may have little choice of lodgings, because it's such a popular time to visit. It's also Whale Season.

In winter the northernmost parts of each island can be very cool, wet and windy. (The surfing championships are held in December on the north shore of Oahu.)

It's not the best time to stay north oon Kauai, but you could stay Poipu and tour north. On Maui I'd just avoid staying Napili or Kapalua. Eveything from Kahana south should be good. South Maui has calmer ocean in winter.

Your DS might get a kick out of Waikiki for a few nights.

Overall, it might technically be rainier, but it isn't tropical deluge season. If you pick a place on the western/southern ends of the island, you will have drier skies and sunnier days.

It is the most expensive time to be there, and the rental cars will be fully booked, so make a rental car reservation as soon as you have decided.

Rain ... it is winter. But it is still warm!

Christmas is HIGH season. Folks taking advantage of time off, kids out of school, fleeing the snow and cold and mayhem of Christmas. Lots of visitors plan a year (or more) in advance. Bargains ... tough to find. Not sure they even exist.

If you go to Kauai, stay on the south end. Maui - you should do fine south of Kapalua. But - winter storms can find you anywhere. Note that most accomodations are on the dry sides of the island.

As an example, here are the average temps and rainfall month-by-month for Lahaina, Maui.
