Is it customary to tip the front desk clerk upn check in?

Hi, just wondering if it is customary, expected, or frowned upon to tip the people who check you in at the front desk of the hotels in hawaii? Will be staying in Waikiki and the Big Island. Aloha!

Tip them for what, if I may ask?

slide them a little extra for an upgrade. nah just kidding. no need at all for this. if you feel they went above and beyond for you durring your stay then u may. most likely you will be dealing with others though. never for the simple check in.

Write a complimentary letter to the general manager if you feel the service the clerk has provided is exceptional. Those letters still mean alot especially if the property has a recognition program for their employees.

<<if you feel they went above and beyond for you durring your stay then u may.>> This approach could actually get them into trouble. And it would be SO awkward. As Bob said above, drop a note to the hotel/resort manager if you think someone on the front desk staff was extraordinary. In the long run, it will be of much more value than any tip!

Absolutely not.

Write the manager a letter if an employee gives superior service.

I've been tipped- I'm a night auditor-, but it's a very rare occurance (the last time was about 3 years ago when I made copies for a seminar). Telling the manager about us is much better, since it'll be noticed at yearly review time. The whole "tipping for an upgraded room" is really really awkward because you might already be in an upgraded room.
