What Islands to stay on?

Just started planning a trip for our first time visit to the islands. We want to stay on at least 2 islands but have no idea where to start. What island/areas are recommended for first timers in their 30s? We want to do a little of everything.....relaxing, exploring, eating. :)

Start by doing some reading; each island offers a little of everything plus some unique things. If you have at least 2 weeks you can do two islands. Start by reading the Summary of Each Island under the Top Questions on this page. A good overall guide book is "Hawai`i for Dummies." Another option is www.gohawaii.com - commercial, but has good information. Know that you will need to rent a car anywhere but in the city of Honolulu.

You can stay on two islands with ten nights in Hawaii -- longer is better! Most first time visitors spend some time in Honolulu for the historic sights, staying on Waikiki. Second most popular island is Maui -- more 'developed' than the others with a wide choice of hotels and condos. Kauai is much quieter. Big Island is spread out and quiet -- but requires more driving because it is so large. Most first-timers aren't into Lanai or Molokai.

What time of year would you visit? If you have a lodging budget, we can help suggest places AFTER you choose your islands.

Our first trip to the islands was for 10 nights. We split them between Oahu and Kauai. This amount of time was perfect for us. You may want to get the book Hawaii for Dummies, I own it, it ail give you a good idea of what each island has to offer.
