Getting around with a rental car

Hello,

How easy is it to find one's way around on both Maui and the Big Island when the driver is timid and nervous about driving in a new place and the passenger is not great at reading maps - lol?

Thanks!

You really need a car on Maui and the Big Island. Your only other recourse is to come with a tour (yuck!) or stay in a central location where you can easily pick-up daily tours. That being said - to really SEE these Islands with any flexibility - you need a car.

I think Maui is incredibly easy. The Big Island is BIG and the conditions fluctuate.

I think they are both easy to travel around - there aren't lots of road choices, so it makes it fairly straightforward. Also, speeds are slower, so you have time to read signs/make choices. Happy driving in Hawaii! :)

Easy. Not many road choices. No freeways to try to navigate.

We rent smallest, cheapest car for Maui and a mid-size or larger on the BIG Big Island. You'll drive farther and at higher speeds on Big Island. The simplified maps from the rental car agents are easy to follow on any of the islands. Locals are polite and very used to tourists trying to find their way; tourists...not so much! Roads are good and clearly marked. You'll be FINE!

I would suggest that you take advantage of google earth's street view feature and "drive" some of the roads. Neither island is hard to navigate with a good map and some preparation.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like it shouldn't be a problem at all.
