The Big Island with kids

We found a house on Alii Drive near Kahalu'u Beach on the Big Island to rent from May 21st-29th 2014 and now we just need to know what we should do when we get there! What should we definitely not miss during our stay? We really enjoy nature, local culture, history, snorkeling/diving (we're certified), and food (farmer's markets, I teach cooking classes). There are 10 of us total and we have a pool at our rental house which will be great for the kids. Grandma, grandpa, sister and her kids (11, 7, & 5), husband, and our kids (almost 3yr old, and a nine month old). I know we should have booked some nights in Hilo but we didn't want to move houses. We don't want to spend too much time in the car but know it is necessary for volcanos. We don't have much of a budget but will fork out the cash to do things that can't be done anywhere else (within reason)! We definitely want to see lava flowing :-) Thanks in advance!!

Gee....hard to know where to start.....

Your accommodation choice has you about an hour's one way drive from the Island's best beaches up in South Kohala.....also great snorkeling .

Given the ages of your young family, it would be ill advised to expose the wee lungs to the potentially toxic emissions from the Volcano. Flowing Lava when it is present is usually a 5-6 hr hike over uneven terrain to view.

However, Trip advisor is an excellent resource with it's top questions section (Top right), that will give some ideas and allow you to inform yourself on sights to explore that are suitable for your family.....lots of trip reports to sift through as well.

Visiting the Big Island can be all about the drive........as,it is so vast. The VOG conditions in the area you have chosen to stay can be quite heavy at times......so the drive up to the clear skies of South Kohala coast may provide a welcome reprieve.

We will take a pass on Kahalu'u....as it is so overused, crowded, and the "sand" is just a dirty grey spit along the shore.

The best Farmer's markets IMO are again about a good 90min drive from where you are staying....up in Waimea.

The Hilo market is definitely worth a stop.

Don't listen to the "sky is falling" warnings about toxic emissions at Volcanos National Park, most area's of the park are completely safe for kids if you use common sense and read any written warnings. The NPS monitors the air constantly and will not allow people in dangerous area's. Simply check there web site at: http://www.nps.gov/havo/closed_areas.htm
