Is it a good idea to sail from Maui to Hawaii?

We are a party of 5 (our girls are 13,11 and 7) its our first time on the islands. We arrive 18 March at night to Maui and leave 31 of March from Kona. What is the best split between the 2 islands for a family that loves hiking biking etc? Are they any option rather than flying between the 2 islands that wont take the whole day?

Thanks

Ruth

Flying is the only option. No inter-island boats for tourists exist at this time.

At this late date, you don't have your accommodations or car rentals booked? You need to be on this NOW.

You need more time for the Big Island, to be sure. I would probably do 5 days on Maui and the rest on the Big Island, splitting that time by staying 2 days in Volcano area and then rest on the West side. If you tell people what you are looking for with lodging & your budget, people are happy to make recommendations, though your choices are going to be pretty limited at this late date. Good luck! :)

Book your interisland flights with Hawaiian airlines today. :)

Aloha,

At this point, I think your time split and island order is going to be determined by lodging and auto cost & availability. Start making lists of options and/or a spreadsheet.

I wouldn't book inter-island flights till I had lodging pinned down.

You can put car reservations on hold at no cost. Put a couple of date options on hold; just be sure to cancel the unneeded ones when your lodging and flights are booked.

Good luck

Ruth, I am very concerned that you do not have your accommodations reserved ... or car reserved. You are traveling during a very busy tourist season. Hawaii can, and does, run out of rental cars ... and prices will go up for cars and accommodations as availability gets tighter.

It looks like you have 13 nights. I'd go with 6 on Maui and 7 on the Big Island. And understand that you will want to change accommodations on the Big Island if you plan to explore the whole Island. It's too large to day trip - say between Hilo and Kona. You can fly to Maui from Hilo - spend time on that side of the Island (Volcanoes National Park, etc.) - then drive to the other side of the Island and stay there ... flying out from Kona.

As said above, your only option is flying ... and understand that flying between the Islands will consume at least a 1/2 day of your trip.

Plan on paying $100 a person for the flight.

I didn't look at cars, but I did a brief look at hotels on Priceline & Hotwire for your approximate dates - and it does look like you still have quite a few choices, if you don't mind booking that way. Do note - for a family of 5, you will have to book 2 hotel rooms. If you go with a condo, you don't have those limitations generally. Good luck! :)
