First Trip

We are planning our first trip to Hawaii for our 30th anniversary. Which island would be best for an all-around vacation; sight-seeing, beaches, relaxation, shopping and night life?

Welcome to TripAdvisor, mcasews!

Please tell us where you are from. There is no hometown, state or even country on your profile. This information helps us a great deal.

There is no such thing as a "best" Island. The "best" Island is the one that you choose based on what you know and what you want. There is no way we can tell you what is best for you ... only you know the answer to that question. Familiarize yourself with Hawaii. Pick up a travel guidebook called "Hawaii for Dummies." We recommend it consistently here on TripAdvisor as it covers all the Islands with a good overview. Also - get a good map of Hawaii. Pull up www.gohawaii.com. It's terribly commercial, but helpful for first-timers.

Learn about the various Islands. You will be amazed. Think of the type of activities you would like and the sights you would like to see. Know your options before making any decisions.

How many nights will you be in Hawaii? If you have more than 10 nights, you may want to visit a couple Islands.

When do you plan to come?

Will you rent a car? You will need one on any of the major Islands with the exception of the City of Honolulu on the Island of Oahu.

If shopping and nightlife is your highest priority - you want the Island of Oahu. But again, make sure that you have a good overview of Hawaii before locking in your plans.

We do all have our favorite islands . . . and researching the islands will help you find the one or two that suit you the best. Do share a bit more and we can try to help with that amazing 30th anniversary trip! :)

All the islands can offer you sight seeing, beaches, and relaxation. As for shopping and night life, Oahu's Waikiki has the most and Maui comes in second.
