United 777-200 vs. United 767-400ER

Hi there

2 of us are flying to HNL in coach on United airlines.

My options are either:

UA219 (777-200)

Seat Row configuration 2,5,2; Seat Width: 18.3inches; No recline; no power ports and no individual TVs, 9 hours on this leg of the trip.

UA145 (767-400ER)

Seat row configuration: 2,3,2; Seat Width: 17.3 inches; 6 inch recline information listed; Power ports and individual TVs 10.5 hours on this leg of the trip.

What would you pick??

I am leaning towards the 767 just for individual TVs and powerports. But, the seat width is smaller and would be spending an extra hour on this particular leg of the flight.

I can't believe a 777 has no recline unless you are in front of an exit row. Imo that would be a deal breaker.

I fly long haul a lot and I don't notice seat width difference. I am averaged size.

I also don't watch a ton of movies but it's a nice distraction.

In general I don't like 2-5-2 because there are so many middle seats and because it takes longer to load/unload. Not to mention Malaysian 370 was a 777 which gives me pause.

I think the 76 sounds better.

The 767 is a comfortable plane. I wouldn't want to spend an extra 1.5 hours on any plane,

Hi there- thanks for your reply :)

The total trip time from Rochester, NY to HNL is the same ~ 13 hours 20 some minutes

The 777 connects from Chicago (9 hours)

The 767 connects from Washington DC, therefore the longer trip time for that portion. (10.5 hours)

Hi KonaGirl:

I tried to edit my original post regarding the recline :( Originally I couldn't find what the recline position was for the 777. But I think it is either 3 or 4 inch recline compared to the 5 inch recline of the 767.

That is a good point about taking longer to unload with the 2,5,2 configuration :)

I vote for the reclining seats particularly since we are talking about long flights to Hawaii from the east coast. (that's where we fly from too, so we know!) As for 777 vs 767? I much prefer flying Boeing planes, as I prefer American made. What happened to that Malaysian Airlines flight I don't think had anything to do with the plane itself. Just my personal opinion.

I got the planes mixed up. Both are comfortable planes. I would still pick the shortest flight.

We used to fly from the East Coast and I would opt for the shortest flight. Plus, O'Hare is a United hub and they have a great food court.

Must it be a United itinerary?

If not , consider the wonderful Hawaiian Airlines......with a ROC-JFK-HNL routing

seatguru.com/airlines/Hawaiian_Airlines/Hawa…

The level of comfort and service is truly first rate. You really get the feeling the holiday has started once aboard that Hawaiian flight.......Something to consider.

Just as a point of clarification the UA 777 does indeed have reclining seats in "Y."

You may also want to look at the number of hours in the entire Travel day in addition to Equipment. Prolonged connection times can certainly prolong the journey.

I have United airmiles that would be a free flight for 2 roundtrip tickets.

Otherwise, I would love to fly Hawaiian airlines.

I wondered if it might be a "points/miles" consideration.

Suggest you to Try looking at a few You tube videos. Punch in United Airlines economy seating 777-200, and then 767-400ER.

You also might want to check out the Economy plus seats....which for this length of flight , the extra room is totally worth any extra cost(or miles) IMO

You tube searches can be quite helpful to give you a visual. Seat guru stats can take you just so far.Sometimes another's experience and commentary can assist in the process.
