Where to stay in Hawaii

My friend and I are planning a trip to Hawaii for 5-7 nights. We normally go to idyllic places like Koh Phangan. We've enjoyed our travels to Thailand as the beaches are amazing, the resorts are pure luxury, it is chilled out, and being two adults in our late 30's its nice to stay at places that do not cater to kids/families.

We enjoy the water, beaches, walks, going out for a drink or two, and really good food.

As its our first time to Hawaii we would really appreciate some advice on what island, beach, or hotel to stay at.

All or any help is appreciated.

What time of year are you going to visit?

What's your nightly accomodations budget before taxes and fees? When someone says "luxury" on Hawaii, those resorts are like 400-500+ USD a night.

Hawaii is not like other tropical destinations where you hang around the resort the whole time. Most people get a rental car and get out an explore. It's a state and part of the USA, not a developing nation.

It's also pretty family friendly so it can be difficult to avoid kids entirely. You'll find fewer in the spring and fall as a whole when many are back in school. Also resorts with fancy pools tend to attract families.

Hawaii can be expensive when you take into account:

- Roundtrip airfare

- Hotel / condo PLUS accommodations tax (13.416%, 13.96% on Oahu) PLUS any parking or resort or cleaning fees

- Rental car (including all of the taxes and fees) and gas

- Any entertainment & activities (luau, snorkeling trip, whale watch, helicopter tour, surfing lessons, snorkel equipment rentals, etc. - all optional but nice if you can afford it)

- Food and drink

- Any shopping/souvenirs

- Etc.

Nayna, we need much more information from you.

Comments and questions:

+ How many nights will you really have?

+ When do you plan to travel?

+ Are you OK with renting a car? You will need one on any of the major Islands with the exception of the City of Honolulu on the Island of Oahu. Oahu is generally rural, so you will need a car there to explore.

+ <<We enjoy the water, beaches, walks, going out for a drink or two, and really good food.>> This is easy enough in Hawaii ... but that else? Are you familiar with the various Islands and what they have to offer? Natural wonders? History and cultural? Water sports? Shopping? (There are more categories!)

+ We cannot in good conscience tell you what you, personally, would prefer. You need to do some reading and make a decision that is a good fit for you. Pick up a copy of "Hawaii for Dummies," a highly-recommended travel guidebook that covers all the Islands. And get a good map of Hawaii as well. Pull up www.gohawaii.com. It's terribly commercial, but helpful for first-timers.

+ You need to choose an Island ... then focus on hotel/resorts.

+ Your trip is short for such a long journey. Are you staying in other parts of the US as well?

+ If you use a travel agent, please run your options by us before buying anything. We see too many plans from UK travel agents ... that are "not good." Let us help you.
