Craters of the Moon

We're going from the Grand Tetons to Glacier and stopping at Craters of the Moon in between.

Where is a good place to camp around Craters of the Moon.

How long will it take to get to Craters...Moon from the Tetons?

How long will it take to get to Whitefish?

Thanks!

At Craters of the MOon, there are tent sites , about 52, no reso, first come . there is water , restrooms, and no showers. it is very windy often, no trees, and no river...bring your own wood for campfire. it will take about 3 hours to get from Teton to Craters...the roads are great and the views are wonderful...enjoy your trip to Idaho.

Campfires are prohibited at Craters of the Moon due to constant wind. You have to have a camp stove to cook.

Hit up Mapquest for driving times. Lava Idaho has a nice resort type hot spring you could add into your itinerary.

We're heading from Yellowstone down toward Twin Falls and plan to stop in at Craters of the Moon. I have 2 questions:

1. How long does one need to spend at Craters of the Moon to get a good experience of the place. We've got a couple of boys (8 and 11) who are interested in the lava tubes, etc, so we'd like to know if it would be worth it to drive from Yellowstone, spend part of a day and some of the next before making our way to Twin Falls/Eden area? Or, is a stopover for 4 or 5 hours on the way by sufficient?

2. How far off the highway is the loop and, particularly, Indian Tunnel, Boys Scout Cave, etc?

Thanks as always.

check out the shoshone ice caves, they are close by . when you get to Carey, you go over the hill and come to the highway in about 20 miles, then you turn south..the ice caves are a wonderful wonder of nature in the desert. the long lava trail goes underground into a lava tube and at the end of the tube, is solid ice. here is the website

showcaves.com/english/…Shoshone.html - C

check out the website, this would be wonderful for boys, and i still enjoy taking visitors there, as well.
