Ilinois best attractions

We'll soon be driving through Illinois on our way south, and I'm looking for your recommendations on where to stop in Illinois. I'm told there are some great parks to see, but really I'm interested in both sightseeing, scenery and good nightlife!

Let me know your best Illinois attractions. Thanks!

That's a great web site, thank you!

Basically we're going on a road trip from Milwaukee to Orlando, visiting some family there. I'm from Denmark, my boyfriend is American, which is why we've decided to make this a road trip so I can get to see some of this great big country! We're 26 and 27 with no kids. Love the outdoors. And we'll be leaving as soon as possible.

Are Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford worth seeing at this time? We could go closer to the summer on a seperate trip.

If anyone could recommend any specific scenic routes to take on our way south, that would greatly appreciated.

Thanks : )

If you are driving from Milwaukee to Florida, the most direct route will take you south along I 294 and then east on I 80/94 before going south on I 65, circling Chicago in the northeast corner of the state. If you take one of the expressways that heads south through Illinois, you will be going southwest, and you want to head southeast towards Florida.

The sights around Chicago are so close to Milwaukee that you could easily make it a weekend trip or even a (very long) day trip. If it were me, I’d make some stops farther along on the trip in places that you might not have an opportunity to visit so easily. Mammoth Cave comes to mind if you like outdoor pursuits.

The Japanese Gardens in Rockford are lovely. We went in late May and really enjoyed it; I don’t know what it would be like in March. However, they would be way off your route to Florida. This, too, would make a great day trip from Milwaukee.

Have a safe trip!

Starved Rock State Park is a great place to hike; you'd need to head south on I39, then east on I80 a bit to get there. You could take I39 south to I74 east to Cincy and continue south on I75 to FL. Enjoy your trip!

Starved rock is ok, also stop at Matthiessen state park gpsbasecamp.com/photos/… almost across the road from starved rock and walk to the falls at the bottom of the canyon (it's probably going to be muddy down there. Garden of the gods shawneeforest.com/Hiking/GardenoftheGods.aspx in southern illinois is nice, fantastic rock formations and hiking. If it were me I'd skip Illinois and spend a couple days in the great smoky mountain national park http://www.nps.gov/grsm/index.htm and stay in Gatlinburg Tennessee. I've seen black bears there almost every time I've hiked there. You could go to Ashville North Carolina and visit the Biltmore house, it's fantastic. http://www.biltmore.com
