Extended stay in Chicago - some questions

My husband will be undergoing a 9 week medical treatment in the Naperville area this summer. We will be staying in Naperville, but our plan is to go some place "fun or interesting" at least one day each week, on a weekday. He should feel fine so our activities will not be restricted in any significant way. We are looking forward to the chance to really explore the area at a relaxed pace, but the options are overwhelming and are wondering about the "hidden gems" that might not be at the top of typical lists. Also, would love your suggestions on transit to and from Naperville i.e. car vs public transportation.

You'll need a car for getting around the immediate area. naperville.il.us/community_relations_visitin…

Metra train from Naperville to/from downtown - metrarail.com/metra/…

I think it would be difficult to stay in Naperville for nine weeks without a car. Pace buses serve Naperville, so you may want to look at their website to determine if where you are staying and the medical facility are on a bus route:

Obviously, plan some time to visit Chicago. But don't forget to also include downtown Naperville and the River Walk in your plans. It's really pleasant on a warm summer evening. There are several restaurants that have outdoor dining, including my favorite, Jimmy's. There are Carillon concerts on Saturdays, Sundays, and Tuesdays, and you can even tour the Carillon Tower.

Good luck with your husband's treatments.

Thank you for the websites Dave and I appreciate the tips on Naperville, lllinoisTrav!

We definitely will have a car! I was just wondering if I could ride the transit into my city destinations rather than drive and hassle with that. We are fine either way, but wasn't sure.

One thing I was wondering - and I know it seems minor - but we will miss our garden of fresh veggies this summer. Is there a good farmer's market or local store that sells local produce in the Naperville area? It is going to be hard to go through summer without homegrown tomatoes!! :)

It seems like all the towns around here have weekly farmers markets. Here's a list:

If you are going into Chicago, and want to avoid driving in the city and Chicago parking fees, plan on taking the train. The BNSF line connects Naperville with Chicago Union Station. Be aware that service is limited on weekends, especially on Sundays, and that the trip takes over an hour unless you can get an express train. You may want to check into the parking situation near the Naperville train station too.

Another spot for an inexpensive day trip close to Naperville is Cantigny. You can tour Colonel McCormick's home and the First Division Museum, but my favorite activity there is just wandering around the gardens. It costs just $5 to park.
