Weekend getaway close by

Hey guys,

I live in Illinois right by St. Louis. I am looking for a little weekend getaway within 5-6 hours of STL. My wife and I are 30 yrs old. We like casinos and sports. Anyone know of anything around?

Thanks guys!

What time of year? If not for sports, I might suggest French Lick, as there is a casino there. Do you mean you want to attend a sporting event, or participate yourselves, and what types of sports?

sorry. Shoulda gave more information. We will probably be going somewhere the first week of March. It would be nice to find somewhere with a nice casino.

try here:

the hotel (new buffalo) aint' cheap, but from the brief time i visited last summer, the resort looks VERY nice... i would venture to say it must be one of the most expansive resort/casinos in the midwest.... you could stay in some nearby, and more affordable, B&B's or inn's and just visit the casino....

this all is pushing your 6 hour drive time limit, but i think it's probably worth it.... but since it's march, not much will be happening in the harbor country beachtowns (it's a bustling area during summer, so it's DEFINITELY worth checking out during the warm season).... you could also investigate areas south, such as memphis....

There are casinos all over the place, including right in the St. Louis area. So you don't really need to travel. French Lick (IN), mentioned above, was originally famous for its baths and the resort with them is still considered a destination location. But it isn't cheap. They also have a nice (though not terribly big) indoor waterpark at another local hotel. And depending on how the weather holds, there is fairly decent skiing (for the Midwest anyway) at Paoli Peaks 10 miles away.

There is also a casino in Peoria (IL), though other than Bradley basketball can't think of much in the way of sports in the area in March. In the Quad Cities (Rock Island and Moline, IL and Davenport and Bettendorf, IA) you have casinos, skiing and some nice restaurants. At about a 7 hour drive you can make it all the way to Wisconsin Dells where you have a variety of destination worthy large indoor waterparks (some designed for children, others for teens and adults), a couple of different ski hills and not far from casinos as well, and for spectator sports there is the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

In the Chicago area, you have a whole host of casinos and of course DePaul, Northwester, and Chicago Bulls basketball, plus theater, shopping, and good restaurants. All just 5 hours and 10 minutes from where you live. But I don't gamble so I can't tell you which casinos would be the best to recommend.
