Weekend get away ideas inside of IL but outside of Chicago

I am new to Chicago and the state of IL and was looking to take my girlfriend on a small 2 day roadtrip over the Valentines weekend somewhere outside of Chicago. Some of her friends suggested Madison. Is that a good 2-3 day retreat or are there other hidden gems in IL worth exploring?

Ideally I was looking for something with a short 2-4h max drive from Chicago.

Ideas welcome!

Also, looking for a reasonably priced weekend (nothing overly expensive).

What are you looking to do? Do you want to snuggle by the fireside, hit microbreweries, see museums, ski?

2-4 hours can get you to Galena, Starved Rock, Milwaukee, Lake Geneva, other areas of southern Wisconsin for skiing....

Hi,

My girlfriend doesn't ski, but we were thinking along the lines of your earlier suggestions. I especially like micro-breweries and fireside suggestions.

If you could elaborate, that would be great!

Thanks.

I'm sure that you realize that any nicer place that close to Chicago (and you aren't even out of the suburbs yet at 2 hours driving time - and that's with good weather) will have a Chicago price-tag. I'm not sure if you would find that "reasonable".

Also, being Valentine's Day weekend, expect a two-night minimum stay at many (maybe all) of the nicer places.

That being said, my vote would go to Galena. 4.5 hours driving in good weather. I wouldn't attempt it if the weather pattern doesn't change in the next couple of weeks.

Just keep in mind that to travel to SW Michigan, you have to drive through a major snow-belt.

I would also post in Wisconsin and Michigan forums. The area around SW Michigan has some wineries and brewpubs but is in a major lake effect snow belt.

Galena makes a really nice weekend trip from Chicago. Springfield does as well. What do you want to do when you get there. If it's the microbreweries, maybe you don't need to go any farther than Milwaukee.
