What to do in Iowa in September

My husband will be on his business trip in Iowa, and we decided to stay for a weekend together since we've never been there before.

So, can anyone suggest what to do? We really enjoy nature trails, wildlife, zoos, anything related to the nature. I've heard many things about Adventure Land, but think it's too cold for swimming, isn't it?

Any place in Iowa would work. Thanks!

Where exactly will you and your husband be staying? You mentioned Adventureland, so will you be near Des Moines?

It will be easier to respond once we learn what city you'll be near, but if you're in Central IA (the Des Moines area), I recommend:

- Stroll through the downtown Des Moines Farmer's Market on Sat. morning.

- There is a fantastic trail system in the Des Moines area, and also on rail trails across the state. If you enjoy biking, walking or roller blading, check out some of the trail options: …des-moines.ia.us/departments/…Maps.htm.

- On a nice day, enjoy the parks and trails at Big Creek State Park or around the Saylorville Reservoir: http://www.stateparks.com/big_creek_polk.html

- Look for the buffalo and elk herds and learn about the prairie at the Neal Smith Nat'l. Wildlife Refuge: http://www.fws.gov/Midwest/NealSmith

- Visit the covered bridges in Madison Co.: http://www.madisoncounty.com/bridge.html

That's just a start!

You might also enjoy Living History Farms, on the west side of Des Moines. Visitors walk on an unpaved trail through the woods to each of three farm sites. The sites depict farming by Indians, in 1850 and in 1900. Historic interpreters will be doing farm chores and you'll be able to try the chores too. Even if you're not into farming, the walk through the woods is very pretty and relaxing.
