Driving through Kansas

I will be taking my daughter to Boulder Co to start a new job and we will drive cross country leisurely. We are looking for fun things to see and in Kansas. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

If you are staying on I-70, I recomend visiting the Grassroots Arts Center in Lucas. It is a hoot. Also the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays and the shopping and restaurants on Mass Street in Lawrence.

If you are taking the more interesting highways away from the Interstate, the choices are much more diverse.

Oz museum Wamego. Eisenhower Museum Abilene. South of Oakley Monument Rocks. A hidden gem. Worlds largest easel in Goodland.

Just to clearify - Monument Rocks (also the Castle Rock Badlands) are the hidden gem, not the world's largest easel:-)

The Salt Museum in Hutchinson KS is very much worth a stop http://www.undergroundmuseum.org/index.php

as is Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure

just make sure you go through the museum area

and for a short stop Cathedral of the Plains is pretty cool

Damar - St. Joseph's Catholic Church - National Historical Site - extremely beautiful - and only 10 miles away or so - Nicodemous and it's Historical part - only all-black town west of the Mississippi. (NW Kansas)

How about the Biggest Ball of Twine in the World in Cawker City? (US24 north of Waconda Lake)

As we say in England "It's absolutely bonkers!"

And not much further north is the center of the 48 contiguous states of the USA near Lebanon, with its chapel smaller than my garden shed

The Ball of Twine is much more interesting than it sounds, but not so interesting that I would change my route across the state to go there. The geographic center of the country is less interesting.
