best route

We are traveling from White River Junction VT. to Bar Harbor mid October. Would like to know the best route to take for seeing the foliage.

Thanks

Did you want ideas for just a one-day drive between the two cities? Are you open to a long day of driving/viewing or just want a generally pleasant, yet direct route?

Great question, Joe...

Travelnell -- most routes from White River Jct to Bar Harbor will take between five and a half and seven hours of driving time (not counting rest/meal/photo stops), with the shortest one involving more miles but at higher speeds -- almost completely Interstate routes that don't necessarily offer the best foliage views. The longer routes tend to use less-efficient, but more scenic routes....some through rural parts of the state. Knowing your priorities will help us recommend a route that best suits your desires.

We are planning to do it in one day. Leaving on Monday am and we have a reservation for that night in Bar Harbor. We don't mind taking all day into the evening getting there. We will be staying in Bar Harbor for a few days before moving on to Kennebunkport and then Boston flying home on Friday. I appreciate any comments. I can't wait to be there and explore a new area! thanks!

You may want to get some NH experts to weigh in too..

The Kancamagus Hwy (Rte 112) is a very scenic route thru the White Mts. You can connect from WRJ via Rte 10 and Rte 118 (no, Woodstock/Lincoln, NH).

At the other end of Rte 112 (Conway, NH) take Rte 16 north to Rte 2 (Gorham, NH).

Perhaps continue on Rte 2 thru Bethel, Rumford, Farmington, Skowhegan...to Hamden. Take Rte 1a south via Wintersport/Bucksport and then Rte 3 to Bar Harbor via Ellsworth.

Mapquest says this is 7.5-8 hrs driving.

Also check mainefoliage.com for updated foliage info which may influence your routing. (Not sure if NH has similar).

Pretty much agree with HD's suggested routing, especially the New Hampshire segment -- Rt 112 plus Rt 16 north to Gorham should give you a good shot at seeing NH foliage at its best.

Might suggest one small change after you get into Maine. Take US 2 east from Gorham, into Bethel, etc. until you get just east of Farmington, ME. Then take Rt 27 down to Augusta, Rt 3 from Augusta to Belfast, and Rt 1 from Belfast to Ellsworth and on to Bar Harbor. This gives you a greater chance of catching peak foliage if it gets here a little earlier than usual.... It's a bit more southerly than HD's route, and even if the more northerly foliage has already started to turn, you still should get some great color between Farmington and Augusta, Augusta and Belfast, and along the coast.

Some nice views on 27 down through the Belgrade Lakes area, and some decent vistas on Rt 3 between Augusta and Belfast. As you head up Rt 1, be sure to watch for signs for the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory -- it's built into the top of one of the towers supporting the suspension bridge over the Penobscot and offers a great view of that part of the coastal region.
