best town for 2 nt stop lvg Acadia going home to NYC area?

Our family of 4 is driving to Boston for 2 nights then heading to Bar Harbor for 5 nts. We'd like to break up the return trip by stopping somewhere around Southern Maine for 2 nts. Is Portsmouth NH a good base (there seems to be many hotel options) or should we make sure to stay in a southern ME beach town instead? We've never been this way before so just don't know. Would like just nice, affordable, relaxed. Not honky tonk but not hoighty toighty! lol.

Affordable will depend on the month, in summer Kennebunkport and Ogunquit (your best bets) are on par with Bar Harbor when it comes to affordability. I think you would probably enjoy being near the southern beaches after the rocky-coast 5 days in Bar Harbor.....the price will probably depend on just how CLOSE to the beach you want to be.

Ocean-view and beachfront accomodations in southern Maine can be quite price, but there are several nice motor hotels and inns that are up on route 1, a mile or so walk to the beaches or a short drive to the pay-parking lots.

Portsmouth N.H. is a charming town with great restaurants and shopping, and a historic district called Srawberry Banke. There are short scenic drives and beaches just north and south of town. Great spot for 2 nights on the way home!
