Planning an Itinerary and need help

We are planning a trip to Maine. Here are the places we want to visit and need help with the possibilities: Fly into Portland, visit Camden, Bar Harbor, Moosehead Lake and finally Nova Scotia. Is the only way to get to N.S. by flying? If anyone has any other suggestions, please offer them. Thanks for the help.

First of all, when are you planning on visiting Maine? How long are you planning on staying? What are your interests?

And you can drive to Nova Scotia. Two choices. Drive from Maine to New Brunswick, take the ferry from Saint John to Digby Nova Scotia or drive from Maine, through New Brunswick and into Nova Scotia.

At present, there is no ferry running between Bar Harbor Maine and Nova Scotia. There are supposedly talks going on to initiate a ferry service for summer 2011. I wouldn't hold my breath.

You certainly can drive to Nova Scotia. I did it in September. The ferry to Digby is generally not a time-saver unless you are planning to go to that particular part of Nova Scotia. Is there a particular destination there you wish to visit?

Your choices in Maine are all good ones and are very popular with visitors. You will have plenty to see and do.

Sorry for the vagueness. Would not be until early Sept. 2011. For time sake, what order would you do my towns? For instance, would you do Greenville first, then cut over to Bar Harbor, Then Nova, and last Camden and then back to Portland to fly out of? Also, can we drive a car rental into Canada? We will have 2 weeks to do this in. In N.S, I wanted to see Halifax, Peggy Cove, Lunenberg, Fay of Bundy. I checked into flying into Portland, rent a car for Maine purposes, fly from Maine to Halifax, and back home to Pittsburgh from N.S, but wayyy to expensive.

All major car rental companies will let you drive into Canada. There may be a special surcharge or extra insurance involved though. Just be sure to tell them in advance and check with your ins co to make sure you have whatever coverage you need. Also, don't forget your passport. An example:

Sat. Fly to Portland, get rental car. walk around Old Port, have dinner

Sun. Breakfast on waterfront, drive to Portland Head, drive to Camden, lunch on the way, drive or hike to top of Mt. Battie, dinner, motel

Mon. Walk along waterfront, drive to Penobscot Narrows Bridge, late lunch in Bar Harbor. Drive Loop Road

Tues Hike Sargent Mt. or Gorham Mt. After lunch rent bike and ride carriage trail, or take whale watching boat.

Wed. Drive to Northeast Harbor or Southwest Harbor, stopping along the way, do another hike or bike ride.

Thurs Drive to Halifax. 8.5 hours per google maps [never visited that part of NS so I have no recommendations]

Sun. or Mon. Drive to Greenville (also 8.5 hours by google maps)

hike or fish or just unwind

Thurs drive to Portland (2.5 - 3 hours) Portland Museum of Art, dinner

Fri Explore Portland area, Freeport, Maine Wildlife Park

Sat. Return car, fly home

Obviously just one of hundreds of permutations, you have to decide based on what you like to do, your budget, etc.

One other suggestion: as you get closer, make sure you find out if there are festivals or events scheduled in September at your destination. You might want to adjust your itinerary to include an event.

Good idea to start planning early for your trip. Two weeks isn't a lot of time to cover a large state such as Maine, and also Nova Scotia.

Suggest you order the Doer's and Dreamer's Guide to Nova Scotia from www.novascotia.com. That will help immensely in your planning at this end of your trip.

As you are interested in the Bay of Fundy, and all your other points of interest in Nova Scotia are not really close to the Bay, suggest you visit St. Martin's in New Brunswick -gateway to the Bay of Fundy, where you can walk on the ocean floor at low tide and visit the sea caves. www.stmartinscanada.com. Plan your drive from Maine and stay the night at the Salmon River Bed and Breakfast.

From St. Martin's, you are an easy drive to Halifax. Your other points of interest, such as Lunenburg and Peggy's Cove are a further distance away.

Once you have firmed your plans up a little better, come visit us on the Nova Scotia forum and we will help you plan the Nova Scotia leg of your trip
