2 week trip to New England in October - what to prefer?

We are a Swedish couple (around 65) planning a two week trip along the New England coast first part of October. We will fly from NY to either Portland or Bangor, and take a one-way rental back to NY,

On our "gross" list are places like: Bar Harbor, Boothbay Harbor, Kennebunk port, Ogunquit, York Harbor, Rockport, Nantucket, Newport. Obviously we can't stay the nigth at all places - maybe four or five. Which should we prefer, and have we missed some? And is it worth the effort to go to Bar Harbor - or will we see similar things at other places? We enjoy staying at top class B&Bs, good food, seeing things, some exercise, and not too quiet a place - this is also mid/low season. Some of the too busy/crowded summer places may be OK at this time

Acadia Natl Park ("Bar Harbor" ) is unique and should not be missed...especially if you can plan to fly into Bangor.

Keep in mind that early Oct in Northern New England is "leaf-peeping" season and some areas will be well-traveled (requiring advance planning on accomodations).

If you are flying into Bangor, going to Bar Harbor / Arcadia National Park is a must do, a ‘no-brainer’…This is a special place, there’s lots to see and savor. Stay at least two days there and take it slow….Starting in Bangor, will make driving / visiting your way south to NY simpler and, you’ll see more.

If you fly into Portland, I would reconsider Bar Harbor…The round trip driving time can be better spent, in my opinion….There is so much to see and do in southern Maine and New England, particularly at a leisurely pace...If starting in Portland, I would travel as far north as Boothbay, Maine.

The following are my suggested ‘must see’….Starting from Boothbay, a little more than a one hour drive north of Portland.

Boothbay Harbor….Five Islands Lobster Pound in Georgetown…Downtown Bath….Freeport and LL Beans…In Portland, the Old Port and Portland Head Light/Fort Williams…Old Orchard Beach, get some ‘Pier Fries’ sit on a bench and people-watch…Kennebunkport and the Pier 77 Ramp Bar in Cape Porpoise….Ogunquit’s Perkins Cove….The village in York Harbor…Downtown Portsmouth, NH….Newburyport, MA, ….Woodman’s Fried Clams in Essex/Ipswich, MA,….Boston for at least two days…Lexington & Concord Ma,….Newport, RI,

My husband and I will be spending 2 weeks in New England this summer with our 2 teenagers. The second week we will be renting a vacation home in Bailey Island Maine. The first week we would like to tour southern New England. We will be arriving into Manchester NH airport where we will pick up a car. What would you suggest for a one week southern NE itinerary that would wind up in Bailey Island?

VFG -- would strongly suggest you do a copy-and-paste with your question into a new forum posting of your own.... otherwise things are going to get very cumbersome here between the questions-and-answers that MangusWA started and the answers-and-subsequent-questions to your question -- which is related to, but somewhat different from the original question.

To start your own posting, "copy" your question from where you've asked it, go to the top of this page and look for blue "Ask a Question" link just above MangusWa's original question. Clicking on "Ask a Question" will open a question box on a new post listing, where you can ask your question and get answers specific to your question.

Doing that will actually simplify life for you, MangusWa, and those of us who are trying to help you.... You might also consider posting your question in the New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island forums since it pertains to "southern New England". Will get you responses from folks who generally know more about those states than many of us on the Maine forum do.

MangusWa -- at the risk of sounding overly repetitive.... would definitly assert that Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park will be uniquely different enough from anything else you'll see anywhere else in Maine, or from Maine to New York, to justify flying to Bangor and spending some time there.... Would try to find a way to give yourself at least one full day there....but two days would be even better and won't feel like "too much time" once you actually get there....
