Coast or Inland?

I will be in Maine for a week. I want to spend 2-3 days in Arcadia, then spend a few days up higher along the coast or inland to Moosehead Lake or Baxter State Park. Any idea how long Arcadia to Baxter would really take? I'd also like an opinion of which might be a better idea overall.

It's Acadia, without an R. Acadia National Park to Baxter State Park is about a three hour drive. But research Baxter carefully before you decide to go there. There are not many services there. There is no easy scenic drive through the Park. It's really for serious backwoods adventurers.

Unless you are prepared for the backwoods, have the proper permits, and are a conditioned hiker, it might be better to concentrate on Acadia National Park and Downeast Maine -- along the coast north and east of Acadia.

I think to see the "real" Maine, you have to experience the coast and the inland areas. Having said that, the purpose of Baxter State Park is to keep that area forever wild. So, as bonniemaev says, there aren't a lot of services, but that might be what you're looking for. Here's everything you need to know:

The Moosehead Lake offers more options for lodging and dining, so if you don't want the true wilderness experience, that's an option:
