Maine in the Rain with Kids - Kennebunkport area

Looking for some suggestions for visiting Maine in rainy weather with young boys (6 and 2 yrs old). We will be there this weekend, labor day. Looks like rain for both Monday and Tuesday. We are staying in Kennebunkport. Plans there include the Trolley Museum (which we may save for a rainy day) and Goose Rocks Beach. We also plan to spend a day in Ogunquit doing outdoor things. This will take up our two nice days, Sat and Sun. Not sure what to do on Mon and Tues if it rains? Would like to have a plan in place so we don't feel like we wasted half of our 4 day trip because of bad weather. Okay with driving a short distance (under an hour), but not super far since we will have already driven 5+ hours to get to Maine! The boys love trains and lighthouses amongst other things. Would it be worth visiting Portland Head Lighthouse on a dreary day? Can you go in the lighthouse? On Tuesday, we will be heading back to southern NY, so would also be okay with making fun stops along the way home if anything rings a bell (dont mind going a little off the beaten path). Would very much appreciate any feedback - thank you!!

Hi there - The trolley museum is a good bet for a rainy day. As for the Portland Head Light - that's more of a sunny day thing. You can't really tour the lighthouse so it's not the best choice. Save it for sun, but it's defiantly a must see. If they like lighthouses, in Portland there's a lighthouse-looking observatory that does 45 minute tours inside: portlandlandmarks.org/observatory/index.php

Your boys might enjoy seeing the USS Albacore submarine in Portsmouth which is a 40 minute drive from Kennebunkport. It's a few bucks and you get to self guide yourself around the sub. They can sit in the seats, lie on a bunk, etc. Their website is: http://ussalbacore.org/ Adults will like it too.

Good luck! Hope they weather improves. When it does - take the boys tidepooling at Kennebunk's middle beach (end of Gooches). I take my students and they love it. Lots of crabs, sea starrs, and snails!

I'm not sure where you're seeing your weather report, but the local stations and NOAA all have good weather right through Monday. Tuesday looks like the first threat of rain. I'm hoping they're right! :-)
