Spending 8 days in the area 27th May to 4th June 2013

Flying in to Logan on 27th May from Toronto and out from Logan to LHR on 4th June this year, we want to get to know the seaboard better from a historical point of view. We like good sea food. We need to have an eye for economical accommodation too as we are a retired couple. We love sea trips. So we continue to research Tripadvisor but would welcome advice, particularly avoiding traffic black spots. We will have rented a car and budget spending less than 130 USD per night on accomodation and breakfast.

Many of the towns up and down the coast have some interesting history, particularly the seafaring and ship-building towns. Damariscove Island, off Boothbay Harbor, was a major center for European fishing fleets that pre-dates the Pilgrims!

You will still be early enough in the season that traffic generally shouldn't be too bad. You are arriving on Memorial Day, so most of the traffic will be heading back in to the Boston area while you will be going out, and you're leaving on Tuesday -- mid-week-- so you just have to avoid rush-hour traffic.

Swing by the Maine Diner north of Wells on rt 1. Great local diner that has been well reviewed by the Phantom Gourmet.

Also make sure you try the lobster. Best in the world.

Barnacle Billy"s at Perkins Cove in Ogunguit is a great place for a lobster, steamers and a beer. Quaint shops and a nice cliff walk. It is one of the best spots to get the feel of the Maine / New England cost.
