Considering Anniversary Trip To Maine

My wife & I are considering celebrating our 10 year anniversary in Maine. I've been all over the US - but never to Maine, so I don't know a lot about what there is to do etc. We have a week - June 22 or 23rd 2014 until around June 30th or July 1 to travel this year. We enjoy great scenery and good food (we're not 5 course meal kind of people - but enjoy a nice dinner - just no penguin suits please - LOL). My wife is interested in coastal views for sure. I'd like to stay in off the beaten path places (like B&B's or maybe a lighthouse 1 night) - I like the idea of a good long ATV ride checking out the forest/trails. She's looking for a sense of luxury (at least for a few nights) where she can have a nice huge soaking tub and cozy/luxury feeling kind of places to stay. Maybe a train ride or something.

We don't mind some driving, but don't want to be on the go every day - maybe a couple of days here , a couple of days there kind of thing.

Wide open to ideas and thoughts.

Thanks for any help. Budget total for 2 (not including airfare) - around $2000 or so. We're flexible to a degree.

Maine is a big place and you indicate interest in both coastal and inland activities. Here are just a couple of ideas for you to look at to get the ball rolling. I am sure others will pipe in:

If you fly into Portland: Portland has become a mecca for foodies so there is no shortage of great restaurants especially down in the Old Port district, Here is a link that may be useful: http://www.visitportland.com/default.aspx

You can get a flavor of Casco Ba by taking the mailboat ferry that calls into a few of the islands off shore. Here is a link to the ferry: http://www.cascobaylines.com/

Lots of nice hotels downtown or you can save a few bucks and all of the typical chains are out near the airport.

For a nice coastal hotel/spa, take a look at Cliff House in Ogunquit which is south of POrtland: http://www.cliffhousemaine.com/

For an inland part of your trip, you could make your way over towards Sebago Lake and/or the Mt Washington Valley. I can't comment on ATV opportunities but perhaps others can.

In terms of staying overnight at a lighthouse, check out the Cuckolds Light off of Southport Island in the Boothbay area -- they plan to offer (and have done some advertising of) overnight stays, although I'm not sure if the plan has been fully implemented yet. Worth contacting them: http://www.cuckoldslight.org/

The Whitehead Island Light, at the entrance to the Muscle Ridge Channel, near Tenants Harbor, also offers a vacation rental opportunity: http://www.whiteheadlightstation.org/

Late June is a good time to drive the coast as it is before the summer crowds. The weather can still be cool, however. The website http://www.watersidehideaways.com lists a few very nice B&Bs directly on the water and off the beaten track that might fit your "luxury" request..
