Need help for a long weekend vacation

Hello all,

Planning a weekend getaway with the girlfriend for my birthday in August. Have never been to Maine so any advice would be great. Looking to stay at a place close to the beach and within walking distance to restaurants/nightlife. I am thinking Bar Harbor would be the best place to stay? Thanks for all the help

Depends a bit on what kind of "beach" you're looking for... If you want a classic "sand" beach, you'll need to look more to destinations in southern Maine (York Old Orchard Beach and Kennebunk/Kennebunkport come most quickly to mind). The only thing on the ocean anywhere near Bar Harbor resembling a "sand" beach in Bar Harbor is Sand Beach in Acadia National Park (not reeally walking distance from the business district or local accommodations) -- and even it's not really "sand"l it's made up of very fine, ocean-ground pieces of shells.

You may want to think about Portland. You can stay in town and then walk to restaurants, bars etc. There is a small beach w/in walking distance. You could take the ferry to Peaks Island. You're also an easy drive to Crescent Beach State Park which is a big expanse of white sand. Plus if you're driving from NY Portland is much more manageable for a weekend than Bar Harbor.
