Beachfront Hotel

We will be spending two plus weeks traveling from Boston to Bar Harbor in 2007. My wife and I want to treat our four year old daughter to several nights in an idyllic beachfront setting. We'd like to find a hotel that is directly on the beach so that she can enjoy the sound of the surf at night and walk directly out of our room onto the beach in the morning. Any location along our travel route is fine and we do not need anything fancy, but cleanliness and friendliness are important. Finally, the surrounding area does not have to be active or touristy, but it can be. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Are you visiting Cape Cod on this trip?

When you are thinking of beach, you probably mean sand. When you are thinking of surf, you probably mean long curling waves breaking on a sandy beach. Maine, for the most part, isn't like that. You won't find that in the Bar Harbor region, where any sand beach is a pretty short little strand between rock outcroppings. Any waterfront hotel in these parts would hear waves slapping on granite and your daughter would be in danger of falling off a short cliff if she wandered from the room to the water.

Perhaps someone knows of such a place in southern Maine.

You should plan a night or two in Ocean Park. Wonderful family atmosphere, but quiet at the same time. Nautilus By The Sea is a B&B that is right on the beach in Ocean Park.

You might want to investigate beach front hotels in the York area. I understand that there is some hotels/motels on the beach there, although I don't know them personally.
