Depends on what you find to be "cool or out of the ordinary." Very likely you'll be able to find something to your liking in Baltimore. Plenty of history, too (Fort McHenry for one--check out the TA list at tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g60811-Activitie… for others.)

Also, a good number of covered bridges throughout Adams County, Pa., where Gettysburg is situated.

Once you're past the Baltimore area, the drive to Gettysburg is pretty much rural and goes through a few small towns. Not sure you'll find anything particularly cool or out of the ordinary IMHO.

I guess when I ment "cool" It was more, just unique and Intresting to the areas. When I drive,I love to see the stuff that maybe you would ordnely just drive by,like the bridges you mentioned the little history markers you would see along the high way.Even the little towns you might drive through and not think twice about it. My chances of bening In this area again are that good,so i like to take In as much as I can In the few days I will be In the Dc area.

i'd also recommend spending some time in baltimore, lotsa different historical sites down there.

as for the drive from baltimore to gettysburgh, i've been wracking my brain for something really unique & i'm drawing a blank.

the most direct route will go right through westminster, which DOES have some historical sites, though nothing spectacular....if you're REALLY a history buff, the farm museum might interest you, & if you're just passing through, be sure to drive main street rather than staying on route 140. the carroll county historical society now owns the historic "cockeys tavern", which is said to be haunted...but not sure when it's going to be open to the public. they haven't owned it for long & have been working on getting it ready.

once you're north of westminster, there IS the Shriver Homestead, also a museum of rural 18th century life, in union mills. right on 97 N which leads directly to gettysburgh, & the drive is pretty for the most part.

be alert for the sign at the MD/PA border that notes the "mason dixon line".

another thing that MIGHT interest you on 97 north of westminster is the bear branch nature center. don't know if you enjoy nature or hiking....but a 1 1/2 mile hike on one of the trails will lead you to an early log cabin (very isolated NOW, i can't even imagine how isolated it was when people LIVED there!) and an exhibit of raptors (all injured birds who can no longer live in the wild).

that would be a right turn on john owings road, off 97.

oh & westminster does have a few of those little historical markers on main street - a civil war skirmish that held somebody up on the way to gettysburg, not to mention the first postal rural delivery service in the nation LOL...

it's only a couple hours drive from B-more to G-burg, so you'd have time to fool around with stuff.

& my last comment before i shut the heck up LOL...

there are a number of very cool restaurants in converted old buildings in westminster.

maggie's, o'lordan's, & paradisio, all have made very old buildings into something wonderful.

& then, there's this...

Awsome thanks all,I love the History aspects and finding the out of the way stuff. The CW skirmish, those battles that were not so well known, and or not visted by many. Even If I can not get to all of them I would love to look up and research it and at least drive to the area. I will diffently look forward to the places you suggested.
