Best places to go for a weekend in Boston!

Hi everyone,

Well, 3 of us have decided to make the trip down to Boston for this coming weekend (July 30-Aug 1).

We're guys in our early 20s and are basically hippies. We want to see the city moreso from the perspective of Bostonians, not tourists. Of course we'll hit up the usuals like Boston Common and Fenway, but aside from the blatantly obvious, what should we be seeing/eating/experiencing? Actually, even of the blatantly obvious, what's necessary to see, and what's not?

We're definitely on a budget, so keep that in mind if you could!

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Set aside at least a couple of hours to hang out in Harvard Square. Check out the "Pit" by the subway station, and the surroundings, for live street musicians (everything from hiphop to Peruvian folk music to classical violin.) The plaza adjacent to the Pit is a haven for chess players - and chess hustlers - and their hangers-on. Lots of people who are "weird in a good way" are there. One block down JFK St, at the corner of Mt Auburn, is a small indoor mall that houses "alternative" shops such as an "anime" store, tattoo parlor, Deadhead emporium, etc. Across JFK St and a short way down Mt Auburn is another mini-plaza with more funky businesses such as Million Year Picnic. Headed eastward along Mass. Ave, you'll see one used record/tape/CD store after another flanking both sides of the street.

Folkies and earthy-crunchies alike love the Veggie Planet restaurant, which is a tiny eatery (4 tables maybe?) in a basement space on Palmer St (between Brattle and Church.) Everything served there is meatless - "vegan option available for any selection" - and tasty.

Head shops? Sorry, they've been outlawed here! Bummer ;-)
