Holiday Inn Hell

Was anyone else out there affected by cancellation of accommodation at Holiday Inn Express Downtown, Boston? This occurred on October 14th. We were on a one month holiday, flight arrived in New York from Tokyo at 7pm, one night in NYC then Amtrak to Boston early the next morning. When we finally arrived at our NYC hotel it had free wireless so thought we'd check our email, to find an email from Holiday Inn explaining they "regret" our accommodation for the next night in Boston was "not ready". Long story short, they gave us less than 12 hours notice of the cancellation because the hotel HASN'T EVEN BEEN BUILT YET! They accepted our reservation in May. The number they left to call was of course "experiencing lengthy delays" so we couldn't get through. As we needed somewhere to stay we logged on to book another room somewhere and being such short notice the only one available in that area was another Holiday Inn, but a suite for US$600. We booked this with the view we'd be telling reception at check in the story and some sort of arrangement could be made. We had to really fight to be given any sort of compensation, the call centre in particular were appalling. A few days later we received another email saying they were crediting us the difference between the two rooms. Never again, Holiday Inn.

It must have been horrific to think you had accommodations and then learn on short notice that you did not. What is the specific location/address of the property you are referring to? There are several Holiday Inn Express properties.

This is not acceptable but at least you got an email.

The Mariott will do this and not email. They will pay for the cost of the taxi to the Mariott in which they send you, after that you are on your own.

The lesson of the story is to call often to confirm your reservation. I would not mess around with hotels under construction. The Mariott Renainsance in Boston feel behind schedule a couple of months.

At least it worked out in the end. Definitely don't book hotels under construction in the future. Just too many delays can happen.

Also another experience I had was we stayed in a hotel on the Big Island of Hawaii and I found out it was being renovated and closed a week AFTER we were planning to stay there. So you think this wouldn't be a problem? To make a long story short, the renovations started before the hotel shutdown (while we were there), one of the restaurants was already shutdown and the remaining restaurant ran out or substituted many food items since they knew they'd be closing and probably didn't want to throw out things. So we thought the renovations wouldn't affect us but they did....
