where to: water, boat view, antiques, luxury accommodations

my husband and i (50's) would like to take our motorcycle for a ride from the hudson valley NY and visit the coast of massachusetts. we enjoy staying at luxury accommodations after hours on the bike. we like to stroll among boats and enjoy views of the water, visit local museums and learn about the history of the area. we love to browse through antique stores, can never get enough of that, and enjoy a good meal and quaint towns with shops. i did a little research, and the town of essex seems promising, as does gloucester. the garrison inn in newburyport seems to possibly fit the bill for us, but is a bit far from those two areas. anyone have any suggestions for us?

Look at Marblehead too. Lots of shops, water views, boats, beautiful old homes. Salem is the next town over with the wonderful Peabody Essex Museum, which has great Early American exhibits.

if you were staying at the Garrison Inn in Newburyport, why would you go to Essex or Gloucester? everything you want is right there in Newburyport.

For luxury accommodations check out Blue, the Inn on the Beach in Newbury, as Thomas says, everything you list is right in Newburyport:

Essex is only a half hour away from Newburyport via a (mostly) pretty drive on Route 1A to Route 133. Gloucester and Rockport are only a little farther. You'll also find antique shops in nearby Georgetown, Rowley, and Ipswich.

Marblehead, as suggested above by BooKat, is also a great idea. It has some antique shops and isn't so far from Cape Ann (Gloucester, Rockport, Essex, Manchester). Take a look at the Marblehead Inn.

You might take a look at the Inn at Castle Hill in Ipswich (www.theinnatcastlehill.com). No meals are served other than breakfast, but it's an exceptionally lovely place, close to Essex (and Ipswich is very attractive and historic, too).
