Fireflies?

Okay, odd question, but here in California we don't have fireflies. My kiddo really, really, wants our visit to coincide when fireflies are out and about.

What month do they start appearing? When is the best time? When do they go away???

LOL. Thanks!

I remember catching them in mid July when I was a kid.

Late June, to mid-July I would say. But I don't see nearly as many as when I did years ago (1950s).

They're definitely a hot-weather phenomenon. It's actually been a while since I've seen any, but I think they should last well into August.

Maybe they can vary by region, but I never saw one after mid-July.

googling, I see that the Museum of Science has an ongoing project to track sightings of fireflys:

I was not aware that they have become more scarce. Just not something I ever thought about. The most I've ever seen at one time was sometime in the 60s - the meadow on the west side of Walden Street in Concord was filled with thousands if not millions of them - enough to make my parents stop the car to admire them.

I don't think I've ever seen a firefly. And when I saw the title of your post I immediately thought of the restaurant chain. lol. Guess I'm hungry.
