The danger of taking on the big lake...

Four people drowned in separate instances in Lake Superior yesterday. Two in Marquette, two in Grand Marais.

Two weeks ago the Wisconsin Secretary of Agriculture drowned while swimming in Marquette...

t\The lake is beautiful but unforgiving. Most locals know this, but many from away aren't as aware.

If you visit, please give the big lake the respect it deserves.

This is wise advice for any body of water. The Chicago Tribune reported that one person drowned this morning in Lake Michigan this morning, one is missing and two were pulled from the water with hypothermia after the group went for a swim from their boat around 2 a.m. within sight of the shore. chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/08/2-woman-pull…

We have had several drownings in SW Lake Michigan the past couple of weeks too. Rip tides are a recurrent problem on rough days.

Another dangerous thing here is jumping off the lighthouse pier into the lake. I frequently ask pier jumping kids if they are locals or visitors. Local kids all know how dangerous pier jumping can be ( tho may do it anyway-- but usually not on wavy days however) Many visitors don't understand the power of the lake and are caught unaware. It seems the ones who drown are visitors. Choppy lake + pier jumping = disaster.

That is such a sad story-all of them. People die every year in the Saginaw Bay, too and it is so shallow so far out....and sometimes you just can't figure it out. You would think even as a visitor, you'd take one look at that BIG LAKE and know it could be trouble, and to take precautions. Thanks for posting.
