We (Mrs H and I) are touring around Lake Michigan in early October (arriving Chicago Sept 28th and spending three nights there) and would appreciate some help with part of the trip.
So far we have booked two nights each at B&B's in Saugatuck and near Traverse City and also plan to stay in Door County Wisconsin on our way back to O'Hare.
That gives us 4 nights in and around the UP. We like to make a base for two or three nights but equally friends have told us that we should at least spend some time on Mackinac Island so I thought a night in either Mackinaw City or St Ignace thus giving us an afternoon on the island followed by three nights somewhere central on the UP that would allow us to explore the area.
So questions -
1) Which of the two towns would make the most sense for what we want and is one better than the other for B&B's? Coming from Traverse City should we head straight there and see the island that afternoon or dawdle along the scenic route and pop over to the island the next day?
2) Which town/village would make the best base in the UP? I'm guessing Marquette should be our first option?
3) Should we consider spending two nights in Mackinaw or St Ignace? That will though only give us one full day in the UP.
Many thanks in advance.
