UP Casino Run

I'm in the mood for a road trip, so I'm going to try to hit all of the UP casinos in a long weekend. I tend to do these without a firm plan of where to stay - just find a motel when I get tired of driving. This will be my first trip west of Tahquamenon Falls.

Friday - leave Detroit mid-afternoon with a target of St. Ignace (Kewadin) for the night. I'll probably divert to Petoskey to meet up with some friends up at Boyne for the weekend.

Saturday - US-2 west, hitting Kewadin Manistique, Escanaba, & Island Resort Casino. Will probably try to make Iron Mountain for the night.

Sunday - Continuing west on US-2 to the Lac Vieux Desert Resort casino. Continue west to the Porcupine Mountains, the up to Ontanogan, Ojibwa Casino in Baraga, targetting Marquette (Ojibwa) or Munising (Kewadin Christmas Casino) for the night.'

Am I missing anything spectacular if I skip the Keweenaw peninsula?

Monday - Explore Pictured Rocks, head to Sault Ste Marie (Kewadin), and backtrack to Brimley for the night (Bay Mills).

Tuesday - Head south towards home. Will probably hit the tiny casino in Hessel, just so I can say I hit all of them (have been there before).

Did I miss any? I'm also a fan of historic bars and brewpubs, so if there are any along my route, please let me know.

Sunday sounds like a lot of travel. I really would say you wouldn't miss much if you skipped Baraga.

The Marquette Casino is getting kind of tired...I guess I wouldn't plan on spending a lot of time there.

The hotel adjacent to the Christmas casino is reopened. http://www.whitepinelodgeonline.com/

Foggy's Bar across the street is a good place to eat. Or failing that, the Brownstone Inn just west of Christmas is also a good place.

I like the Petoskey Casino and St. Ignace is OK. Probably the nicest is the Island Casino in Harris.

If you stay in Mqt the Vierling Brew Pub and Sample Room Restaurant is a great place for dinner (they have the best whitefish IMO).

I haven't been to the Watersmeet Casino is a long time so really can't give you much info there.

Sounds like a lot of windshield time...

Good luck

I agree with 24fan.

That's a lot of travel in one day and if you miss Baraga, plan another trip to take that in along with the Keewenaw. It's a beautiful place and just a quick drive thru really won't do it justice.

If you want a little bit of scenery, stop at the Paulding General Store(north from LVD on M-45) and get what are probably the biggest ice cream cones I've ever had (tell Jason I said hello) THEN take the short drive to Bond Falls. They have a beautiful walk all around the bottom of the falls.

From Lac View Desert to Mqt is about an hour, hour and a half drive, depending on if you get behind a slow mover.........and there really are no hotels or motels between the two places.

In Ishpeming, you could also visit Jasper Ridge Brewery (my kids tell me the Golden Wheat is to die for).

Good luck at the casinos.
