where to stay in southwest region Sunday, Sept. 4th

we will be on our way back from Petoskey headed towards St. Louis and need somewhere nice to stay between Grand Rapids and Chicago essentially. we will be staying in South Haven on the way up the coast and I have looked quite a bit at Saugatuck area but it is Labor Day weekend then and not finding much available or need to pay big bucks. any suggestions? we might even just stay at Hampton Inn or something like that in Grand Rapids, Holland, St. Joseph but trying to still see the sights and have a fun different place to stay. let me know what you think anyone! thanks. pecugl

Any of the beach towns will be busy on Labor Day weekend, but if you give a few more details re: what you're looking for (activities, types of dining, ages of those involved, etc.) there are lots of us who could help you. Where there's a will, there's a way!

But while I'm thinking about it, Grand Rapids might be an option. There are lots of good restaurants and things to do. The Meijer Gardens (http://www.meijergardens.org/) are beautiful and quite unique. The West Michigan Whitecaps (minor league baseball team) have a great ball park. The John Ball Zoo (http://johnballzoosociety.org/) is nice as well. And the list goes on...

thanks top fan, I am thinking more of Grand Rapids also. and wondering if it would be better to just go south through Kalamazoo and avoid Chicago area all together even though out of our way in regards to heading towards St. Louis. we have great botanical garden, zoo, and baseball in St. Louis but have heard of the garden there and it would be much easier (and less expensive!) to find a place to stay in Grand Rapids. I have made several other posts recently describing us but didn't get too many replies at first. we are couple in our 50's, no kids, like great scenery, nice places to stay, good food and drink, things to do but not huge crowds. maybe we will lean towards Grand Rapids. I know you are a big promoter of the Grand Haven area and we will coming through there on the way up from South Haven to Ludington one day, any lunch ideas with a great view? thanks, pecugl.

In order of preference:

If the weather cooperates - and it usually does - my favorite place for an outside meal is the Snug Harbor deck. The Snug (on Harbor Drive) is right on the boardwalk that follows the Grand River out to Lake Michigan. You can watch all the activity, both human and boats (on weekends, lots of both). It's a very popular place to enjoy a drink or two and / or a meal. http://www.harborrestaurants.com/snugharbor/

K-2, which is on the roof of the Kirby Grille, offers pizza, drinks and a view of the river also, albeit a lesser view. http://www.thegilmorecollection.com/k2.php

I haven't been on the deck of the Bil Mar for a couple of years, but they have a deck that's right on the beach of the big lake that serves a lighter fare. I'm not a big fan of the restaurant and I've heard similar comments from other locals. http://www.bil-margrandhaven.com/

Also, IMO your idea of bypassing Chicago on the way home is a good idea too. If you're looking for a nice place to stay in Grand Rapids, I recommend the J W Marriott. It's relatively new, upscale and if you get an upper room on the river you'll love it. http://ilovethejw.com/

If you have any more questions, let me know. Good luck with your travels and enjoy West Michigan.
