best towns to drink beer in Michigan

I am planning a road trip with a couple friends this summer and was hoping to get some good suggestions on which cities/towns we should consider staying in for a night. We'd like to hit a place with great craft beers on tap, so we're thinking Kalamazoo might be a good option since they have Bell's Brewery. Are there any other places we should consider staying instead or in addition to? Great breweries or great bars with lots of good high end IPAs, Belgians, stouts etc. would be great. Thanks!

Up here in Traverse City there is Right Brain Brewery, North Peak Brewery, Mackinaw Brewing Company and around the bay you'll find Shorts Brewing Company in Bellaire. There is the 7 Monks Tap Room right in downtown Traverse City that offers over 40 beers on tap.

With the wineries, meaderies, and distilleries you can certainly have a lot of fun! Throw in the casinos and you can have a great time up here.

Traverse City would be a great overnighter or two for you. There's a couple great brewpubs right in TC and a couple of others well worth visiting within a short drive. In TC, my favorites are Right Brain Brewery (www.rightbrainbrewery.com) and North Peak Brewing Co (www.northpeak.net). There's also Mackinaw Brewing Co, which is just o.k. to me (www.mackinawbrewing.com) and Kilkenny's Irish Public House, which I've not yet visited...but sounds great. (http://kilkennyspub.com/)

Jolly Pumpkin is not too far out of town on Old Mission Peninsula...and it's a nice drive. I've not been to this Jolly Pumpkin, but I did visit the JP in Ann Arbor and I was not at all impressed...A lot of people do seem to speak highly of it though. (www.jollypumpkin.com) Also out of TC, in Bellaire, is Shorts...my favorite Michigan Brewery. It's a bit of a trek from Downtown TC, but it's well worth it...cool funky brewpub with a great atmosphere, good people and often good entertainment. (www.shortsbrewing.com)

Depending on your dates, there might be something going on in TC when you come...there's some great festivals as well as loads of smaller events in TC throughout the year...there's even a Summer and Winter Microbrew and Music Festival put on by Porterhouse productions (www.porterhouseproductions.com) This year's winter version is Sat Feb 11 and as a bonus, Blues Traveller's playing the TC Opera House the evening before. TC's just an overall great destination for food, beer, music, entertainment, etc.

Hope this helps, I'm sure you'll have a blast wherever you decide to go!

I've been all over Michigan and have never really had a hard time finding good beer. Plenty of micro-breweries and good pubs all over the state (many already covered). Knowing your trip plan would help.

Have to agree with Traverse City as noted. Plenty within walking distance of each other. Although, if you're staying in Bellaire, Short's is one of the best.

In Grand Rapids you'll definitely want to check out Hopcat (www. Hopcat.com), and a few short blocks away is Founders Brewery (www.foundersbrewing.com). Downtown GR also has some great summer events going on and excellent hotels. You'd also be about a 40 minute drive from Holland's New Holland Brewery (http://newhollandbrew.com). Twenty minutes south of there is the Saugatuck Brewing Company ('http://saugatuckbrewing.com), and 20 minutes north of Holland is Old Boy's Brewery in Spring Lake (http://oldboysbrewhouse.com), where you sit out on their deck and watch the boat traffic going in and out of Spring Lake. Best of luck on your brew quest!

Thanks for all the great responses. Our plan was just to come up for a night or two from Cleveland (we'll be driving in from a couple hours away from the south to catch a ball game for the night there, then are planning on heading up to Michigan somewhere for some good beer.) We'd probably spend one night in Kalamazoo and then a third night somewhere else in Michigan. Traverse City sounds fantastic, but my concern there is that it might be too far north, since we'll have to come back down thru Ohio on the way back home. Is Traverse City the next best beer town in Michigan, or even the best - if so, we might consider extending our trip to do that. But if it's not considerably better than some other cities down in the south in the Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, Detroit and below part of the state, that'd probably be a little more convenient. But we're still open to all suggestions - if we can't do it this trip, we'll just have to plan a second beer trip up to Michigan sometime later!

If you are that limited on time I would not head up north. I probably would not even start as far west as Kalamazoo. While Bells is great (I actually did a college marketing project on them many years ago), you can get their beer all over the state. Detroit will give you the most breweries in a small area, plus many of theme pubs.

Hi, Kalamazoo is a great beer town. As you point out, It's home to Bell's and Olde Peninsula. Here's a link to info:

michigan.org/Things-to-Do/…

There's also an interesting place called the Kalamazoo Beer Exchange

If you're in the area, also visit our little town of Paw Paw with its own Brewing Company and St. Julian's Winery, one of the larger ones in SW Michigan. Summer is a great time to be visiting any where in Michigan. Enjoy! BB
