Hotel Availabilty in the summer along western Michigan.

We are a family of 2 adults and 2 boys, ages 5 and 7, who will be travelling up the shore of Lake Michigan on Michigan's west coast and hitting all the beach towns on our way to the upper pennisula. We have found so many things to do along the way, we would like to "wing it" and not have set hotel reservations. Is this a realistic plan in mid to late July? Will we be able to find accomodations along the way or is everything filled up at that time of year? We are willing to stay at mom and pop motels, hotels, resorts or a cabin as long as they are clean and safe. Can anyone give us advice on this and also any recommendations on where to stay and what to do. Thanks in advance. We can't wait to visit Michigan!

The west Michigan beach towns have about 2.5 months of prime visitation and mid/late July is right in the middle of it. It is likely that most hotels/motels right along the lakeshore will be booked up, especially on weekends. If you're willing to drive inland for lodging, then I think you could safely wing it but you could end up searching for a place with an opening and/or driving a while to get to it.

just be prepared for lodging sticker shock.... the closer to the lake you are, the more expen$$$ive it will be.... like luv2 said, during the week, you *should* be fine, but it will be tough on the weekends..... once you get up to the yoop, lodging should be a little easier (and cheaper) to come by.... but, if you have an idea where you think you might end up on the weekend[s] during your trip, it might be wise to make reservations, then wing it during the week.....
