Driving the Mississippi ...

... or at least alongside the Mississippi!

I am starting to look at the possibility of driving from the start of the Mississippi River to the end fo our family's summer vacation ...

I know the river starts at Lake Itasca -- is that near any sizeable towns? Or how far away -- in minutes? I know distance/time is dependant on the state of the local roads.

Any recomendations on where to stay nearby? Lodge? Cabin? Hotel?

Further down river?

Thanks in advance!

Wendy

What a fun trip. Here is some info www.byways.org/browse/byways/2279/travel.html on the Mississippi River way. From the map, of minnesota, you can see Itasca Is close to Grand rapids Mn, going to Brianerd, St Cloud, Twin Cities, And lovely town south Lake City, Winona and then continues on. They had a big write up in the paper -a year or 2 ago-when the big floatila came down following the river. For places to stay- you'd have hotels/motels in towns, resorts depending on how long and where. Enjoy

Actually, the Mississippi starts about 20 miles north of Park Rapids, MN, and from there, meanders it's way to Bemidji, where it starts heading south. Park Rapids and Bemidji both have a plethora loding options from campgrounds, cottages, hotels and motels. start with www.exploreminnesota.com for more info, and have a great trip!

Itasca State Park, where the Mississippi headwaters is located, has beautiful camping cabins right in the park. It also has a lodge and campgrounds. It is a lovely park, with bike trails, swimming beach, bike rentals, etc. Nearby Park Rapids is a fun little town with cute shops, yummy candy and a small town feel. From there you can probably plan to stop farther down river for another night...Winona area is beautiful too.

Enjoy your trip!

my wife's family was from Park Rapids. she still has brother in Grand Rapids. We visted there twice. Once were to Lake Itasca where it begins seemed importanto to us to see where it started. We sort of followed along it to grand rapids though was not simple. it is pretty good stream by Grand Rapids. but we headed to Duluth from there.

We picked it up again just east of Twin Cities and followed well into Iowa. Nice drive much of it right next to River.

Where is the end destination? There are tons of cottages available for rent on one or more of the lakes down the Mississippi.

Are there any specific activites that you are lloking to do?

You really might want to consider going into Wisconsin at Hastings MN and following the river south from Prescott Wisc. on 35...very beautiful drive through some really nice little river towns like Alma, Nelson etc. Took the bike down that road and loved it, then we crossed back over at Winona MN which is a very nice town as well. Have a good trip !!
